{"id":61187,"date":"2014-12-21T10:22:09","date_gmt":"2014-12-21T18:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=61187"},"modified":"2019-06-16T09:01:46","modified_gmt":"2019-06-16T17:01:46","slug":"who-was-that-islander-woman-who-stabbed-her-eight-kids-in-cairns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=61187","title":{"rendered":"Who Was That Islander Woman Who Stabbed Her Eight Kids In Cairns?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These themes of drunkeness, lousy parenting, children out of wedlock, and senseless violence are disturbingly common in large swathes of black life around the globe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/neighbours-reveal-what-mersane-warria-was-doing-before-eight-children-were-found-dead-in-cairns\/story-fncynjr2-1227163142200\">REPORT<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Eight bodies, most of them very small children, were pulled from the house through the previous night after Mersane Warria, also known as Raina Thaiday, 37, allegedly went berserk and stabbed and suffocated to death her seven children and a niece.<br \/>\nFour girls, aged 14, 12, 11 and two, and four boys aged nine, eight, six and five were murdered.<br \/>\nPolice have now spoken to their five fathers after their deaths&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Murray St in Manoora, in the western part of Cairns, had a reputation as one of Cairns\u2019 most notorious areas long before this inconceivable crime&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>They are accustomed to drunkenness and domestic violence, which is why a group of teenagers didn\u2019t pay too much attention when they saw Warria, whom they knew as Aunty Mali, allegedly acting very strangely in the street, hours before the murders.<br \/>\nSisters Cristal and Jade Atkinson, 19 and 14, Aaron Oui, 14, had turned into Murray St at 11.30pm on Thursday evening and encountered Aunty Mali on the road, several hundred metres from her home, screaming into her phone at someone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was saying (on the phone) really twisted words,\u201d says Cristal.<br \/>\n\u201cWe just thought she was drunk.\u201d<br \/>\nIn this area, made up of white, Torres Strait Islander and indigenous families, people expect a certain amount of steady trouble.<br \/>\nIt becomes compounded in the hot months leading up to Christmas, when people drink harder to fight off the heat. And then spirals further with the knowledge their kids\u2019 Christmas is disappearing on alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n<p>She was seeing two men, neither of whom were the father to any of her kids. She\u2019d broken up with one of them two nights earlier&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Natasha says Murray St gets a bad rap. \u201cThe cops make it seem bad.\u201d<br \/>\nBut no one works, she says, and she doesn\u2019t even know how much rent she pays \u2013 it comes straight out of her dole.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not as bad as it seems,\u201d she says, taking a slug from her Jim Beam mixer can, at 6.45am.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These themes of drunkeness, lousy parenting, children out of wedlock, and senseless violence are disturbingly common in large swathes of black life around the globe.
