One of my professors was <a\n href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidney_Morgenbesser\">Sidney<br \/>\nMorgenbesser<\/a> [an ordained rabbi]. He wasn&#8217;t a communist. I liked him personally.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll never forget I wrote a paper for him comparing Judaism with<br \/>\nMarxism as philosophies of life. I knew that had he lived another 100<br \/>\nyears, he would not have gotten another paper like that at Columbia. I<br \/>\nknew he wondered how I got in &#8212; that I actually believed in religion<br \/>\nand thought it was superior to Marxism. To his credit, he gave me a B.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sure he wanted to give me a D but it was too well-researched. I was<br \/>\nlike a sort of extra-terrestrial. I felt that way at graduate school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a\n href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidney_Morgenbesser\"><br \/>\nWikipedia<\/a>: &#8220;Sidney Morgenbesser (September 22, 1921 \u2013 August<br \/>\n1, 2004) was a Columbia University philosopher. Born in New York City,<br \/>\nhe undertook philosophical study at the City College of New York and<br \/>\nrabbinical study at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, then<br \/>\npursued graduate study in philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania,<br \/>\nwhere he wrote his Ph.D. thesis under the direction of Nelson Goodman.<br \/>\nMorgenbesser returned to Columbia to teach in 1953 and, in 1975, was<br \/>\nnamed the John Dewey Professor of Philosophy there. Morgenbesser was<br \/>\nknown particularly for his sharp witticisms and humor, which often<br \/>\npenetrated to the heart of the philosophical issue at hand. He<br \/>\npublished little, and established no school, but was revered for his<br \/>\nextraordinary intelligence and moral seriousness.
