The first time I had a responsible position in (a Conservative) synagogue (1994), I was asked to man the door to the sanctuary so people didn’t walk in while the rabbi was talking. I misunderstood and tried to stop people from walking out while the rabbi was speaking. And then I tried to stop this angry lesbian from walking in during the rabbi’s talk. So the shul had a board meeting and my name came up and I was relieved of my position. The rabbi said later I didn’t have to be such a Nazi.
