{"id":45324,"date":"2012-07-26T06:54:40","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T14:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=45324"},"modified":"2012-07-26T06:54:40","modified_gmt":"2012-07-26T14:54:40","slug":"rubashkin-revenge-ethical-certificates-at-center-of-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=45324","title":{"rendered":"Rubashkin Revenge: Ethical Certificates at Center of Dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.jewishjournal.com\/articles\/print\/rubashkin_revenge_ethical_certificates_at_center_of_dispute_20120725\/\">The Jewish Journal reports<\/a>: About eight months ago, when Katsuji Tanabe agreed to display the Tav HaYosher certificate in the window of his one-year-old restaurant on Pico Boulevard, the head chef and owner of Mexikosher knew that the \u201cethical seal,\u201d issued by the Modern Orthodox social justice organization Uri L\u2019Tzedek, would inform customers that he treats his workers with respect and in accordance with California labor laws.<\/p>\n<p>Tanabe didn\u2019t know that in displaying the certificate he was also, in effect, choosing a side in a mostly covert battle between two segments of the Orthodox Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>On one side is Uri L\u2019Tzedek, a four-year old nonprofit promoting social justice causes that has been supported by a handful of prominent Jewish foundations, including the Joshua Venture Group, Bikkurim, and the Jewish Federations of North America.
