{"id":41683,"date":"2012-03-14T09:25:15","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T17:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=41683"},"modified":"2012-03-14T13:24:09","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T21:24:09","slug":"is-the-shulchan-aruch-the-jewish-constitution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=41683","title":{"rendered":"Is The Shulchan Aruch The Jewish Constitution?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One frequently given definition of an Orthodox Jew is one who abides by the 15th Century code of Jewish law &#8212; the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shulchan_Aruch\">Shulchan Aruch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his third lecture on <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Benjamin_Sofer\">Rabbi Abraham Samuel Sofer (Ketav Sofer)<\/a> for <A HREF=\"http:\/\/torahinmotion.org\">Torah in Motion<\/a>, Orthodox rabbi and history professor <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marc_B._Shapiro\">Marc B. Shapiro<\/a> says: &#8220;Every single Orthodox synagogue in the United States does something not in accord with the Shulchan Aruch and I&#8217;m sure many haredi minyanim as well. According to the Shulchan Aruch (261), Sabbath begins and ends with the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rabbeinu_Tam\">Rabbenu Tam<\/a>&#8216;s opinion (which holds that the Sabbath starts 72 minutes after sunset, which was the dominant Jewish position in Eastern Europe a hundred years ago).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marc Shapiro sent this inquiry to various Orthodox Jewish sites online that invite halachic (Jewish law) questions: &#8220;If I&#8217;m driving in my car just before the Sabbath and I&#8217;m stuck in traffic, can I hold by the Rabbenu Tam opinion?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two of the halachic sites said you could not hold by the Rabbenu Tam in this emergency but another site said you could.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One frequently given definition of an Orthodox Jew is one who abides by the 15th Century code of Jewish law &#8212; the Shulchan Aruch.
