Shapiro<\/a> says: &#8220;In the haredi world [ultra-Orthodoxy], [<A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_B._Soloveitchik\">Rav J.B. Soloveitchik<\/a>] is recognized as a Torah scholar but not as a gadol [great rabbi]. Why not? He knew as much as these others. He knew more than them. They know. They&#8217;ll tell you he knew more but the difference between a Torah scholar and a gadol is that the gadol has to hold by the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Da'as_Torah\">da&#8217;as Torah<\/a> [general teachings of the senior <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haredi_Judaism\">haredi<\/a> rabbis], by the perspective established by the haredi sages of the previous generation like the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avrohom_Yeshaya_Karelitz\">Chazon Ish<\/a>. If you break with that and become a Zionist, you&#8217;re a Torah sage but not a gadol. You can see by <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yated_Ne'eman_(Israel)\">Yated Ne&#8217;eman<\/a> in the Hebrew who&#8217;s a gadol, who gets the title of <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maran\">maran<\/a>, harav ha gaon and who just gets rabbi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ovadia_Yosef\">Ovadiah Yosef<\/a> used to be a gadol.
