{"id":37805,"date":"2011-11-05T19:47:47","date_gmt":"2011-11-06T03:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=37805"},"modified":"2011-11-17T16:53:03","modified_gmt":"2011-11-18T00:53:03","slug":"why-are-so-many-alexander-technique-teachers-jewish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=37805","title":{"rendered":"Why Are So Many Alexander Technique Teachers Jewish?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran Alexander teacher Frank Ottiwell made a stray remark about training with <A HREF=\"http:\/\/alexandertechnique.com\/ats\/ottiwell\/\">Judy Leibowitz<\/a> in New York in 1958 with a &#8220;dozen Jews.&#8221; (Cited in <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.directionjournal.com\/live-brookelieb\/\">this interview<\/a> with Brooke Lieb.)<\/p>\n<p>That made me wonder why so many Alexander teachers are Jewish. My estimate is that about a third of Alexander teachers are Jewish. For instance, Israel has more Alexander teachers per capita (about 500) than any other country in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Now most of these Jews teaching the Technique are not Orthodox. So why are secular Jews so attracted to the Technique?<\/p>\n<p>Well, Alexander teachers tend to disproportionately come from backgrounds in show business (acting or music or dance) and Jews are disproportionate in that industry. <\/p>\n<p>Jews tend to have high IQs and Alexander Technique is cognitively directed movement.<\/p>\n<p>Secular Jews tend to seek out substitute religions and Alexander Technique can be an all-encompassing theory of life that substitutes for religion for many.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran Alexander teacher Frank Ottiwell made a stray remark about training with Judy Leibowitz in New York in 1958 with a &#8220;dozen Jews.&#8221; (Cited in this interview with Brooke Lieb.)
