But the cable companies were without vision.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, they had heard the whole megillah before, what with attempts like Mosaic TV, Chai TV and JTV to establish cable channels about Jewish life and culture. &ldquo;But the people who tried to do it before either didn&rsquo;t know enough about television or didn&rsquo;t know about the U.S. market,&rdquo; said Mr. Singer, 38, chief executive of the Jewish Channel, which recently became available in the New York area. &ldquo;One of the first questions I was asked by cable operators is, &lsquo;What makes you think you can succeed?&rsquo; &rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Mr. Singer prevailed, in part because of his job background in ethnic television. The Jewish Channel &mdash; a premium offering, at about $5 a month &mdash; has been available on <a title=\"More information about Cablevision Systems Corp\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/cablevision_systems_corporation\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><font color=\"#000066\">Cablevision<\/font><\/a> since September, on <a title=\"More information about Time Warner Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/time_warner_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><font color=\"#000066\">Time Warner<\/font><\/a> since early June and on <a title=\"More information about Verizon Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/verizon_communications_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><font color=\"#000066\">Verizon<\/font><\/a> Fios since mid-July.<\/p>\n<p>The channel&rsquo;s estimated 20,000 subscribers, most of them in the metropolitan New York area, can choose from programming categories like &ldquo;Israel&rdquo;; &ldquo;history and remembrance,&rdquo; which deals largely with the Holocaust; and &ldquo;American Jewry,&rdquo; which includes documentaries about Jews in the California Gold Rush and other memorable periods.<\/p>\n<p>The channel, which has been labeled the &ldquo;Jewish <a title=\"More articles about HBO.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/home_box_office_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><font color=\"#000066\">HBO<\/font><\/a>,&rdquo; relies mostly on pre-existing content. Original programming includes &ldquo;Inside the Issues,&rdquo; a monthly <a title=\"More articles about Charlie Rose.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/r\/charlie_rose\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\"><font color=\"#000066\">Charlie Rose<\/font><\/a>-style program produced in partnership with The Jewish Daily Forward, (a newspaper and Web site), and &ldquo;Rabbis Roundtable,&rdquo; a group of Reform, Conservative and Orthodox spiritual leaders who convene each month to debate controversial issues like <a title=\"More articles about Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/barack_obama\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\"><font color=\"#000066\">Barack Obama<\/font><\/a>&rsquo;s loyalty to the <a title=\"More articles about Jeremiah A. Wright Jr..\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/w\/jeremiah_a_wright_jr\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\"><font color=\"#000066\">Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.<\/font><\/a>, interfaith marriage and <a title=\"More articles about Eliot L. Spitzer.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/s\/eliot_l_spitzer\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\"><font color=\"#000066\">Eliot Spitzer<\/font><\/a>&rsquo;s infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t have high hopes&rdquo; for the round table, Mr. Singer said. &ldquo;I figured people had enough of their rabbis at their weekly or monthly or annual visits to the synagogue, but it&rsquo;s become one of our most popular productions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The initial skepticism of cable operators has been matched by the misconceptions of friends and potential subscribers who assume that the channel is 24\/7 Borscht Belt humor or mainstream fare like &ldquo;Crossing Delancey&rdquo; and &ldquo;Schindler&rsquo;s List.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the New York Times: In the beginning, when Elie Singer created the Jewish Channel, he saw that it was good.
