Elisa threatened me with legal action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewcy.com\/post\/summer_reading_german_bride\">Now Albert writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The German Bride<\/em>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.joannahershon.com\/\">Joanna Hershon&rsquo;s<\/a> third novel, is that rare thing: a historical novel that unfolds organically without a whole lot of &ldquo;Look at me! I&rsquo;m a historical novel!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which is perhaps why the <em>New York Times<\/em> couldn&rsquo;t quite figure out how to properly essentialize: the title and opening of the <em>Times<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/06\/08\/books\/review\/Weisgall-t.html?_r=1&amp;ref=review&amp;oref=slogin\">review<\/a> are pretty goddamn idiotic and offensive given that Hershon&rsquo;s novel has nothing whatsoever to do with Yiddish culture.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Whenever I read the word &quot;offensive&quot;, I figure the writer is a thin-skinned ninny.<\/p>\n<p>And what kind of person uses the word &quot;essentialize&quot;?<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m going to actualize myself and have lunch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The nastiest person I had to deal with in my Jewish literature interview series was Elisa Albert who took great offense when I quoted the New York Times write-up of her marriage (since ended).
