{"id":3207,"date":"2008-06-12T13:03:18","date_gmt":"2008-06-12T21:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=3207"},"modified":"2008-06-13T13:54:59","modified_gmt":"2008-06-13T21:54:59","slug":"emma-opposes-irish-entry-into-the-european-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=3207","title":{"rendered":"Emma Opposes Irish Ratification Of The New European Union Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) &#8212; Ireland&#8217;s citizens voted Thursday on whether to accept or reject the <a title=\"More articles about the European Union.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/e\/european_union\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">European Union&#8217;s<\/a> new reform treaty, a painstakingly negotiated pact that would be damaged or destroyed by an Irish &#8221;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--adsense--><\/p>\n<p>The Lisbon Treaty seeks to reshape EU institutions and powers to cope with the bloc&#8217;s near-doubling in size over the past four years from 15 to 27 nations with 495 million people. It contains many of the same reform plans as the EU&#8217;s previous master plan: a constitution rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>This time, among EU nations, only Ireland&#8217;s 3 million registered voters present a serious threat to ratification.
