This one is in Rhode Island<\/a>, of all places. Can we really win some of these never-wuzzer races?<\/p>\n

CHAIM AMALEK EMAILS: Is there actually a “Tea Party<\/a>“, and what does it stand for, as a party? Local media are curiously silent on this issue.<\/p>\n

KHUNRUM EMAILS: Not surprising in Liberal New York City. The issue I believe is less taxes and less government spending. I just came from early voting and punched the straight Republican ticket. I may be Tea Party myself.<\/p>\n

\nDoes that mean you support Christine O’Donnell (the witch from Delaware)?<\/p>\n

BTW, in California, I could not bring myself to vote for Sen. Barbara Boxer or Carly Fiorina because both are clearly dopes so I voted libertarian. (Everyone I know who was at HP when Fiorina was there hated her. When she was fired the entire corporation broke out into a rousing chorus of “Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead”).<\/p>\n

I also could not bring myself to vote for Brown or Whitman, so once again the libertarians got my vote.<\/p>\n

You will be pleased to note that I voted to legalize pot. Luke, how will you vote on this issue of great importance?<\/p>\n

LUKE SAYS: I support Christine O’Donnell and every Republican because I vote on the basis of values, not personalities. I have always voted Republican because I am a conservative — (I believe in small government, local government, strong defense, death penalty for murderers). I oppose the legalization of drugs, including marijuana.<\/p>\n

CHAIM AMALEK EMAILS: The Republican party used to include lots of very sensible, reasonably well educated people. But somewhere around the time it became obligatory for a Republican Party Man to buy into Reagan’s “deficits don’t matter” pitch and defending GWB’s record, the party collapsed in on itself. I normally cast write-in votes for most major offices. Any of you want to be Governor of New York?<\/p>\n

I too know people who work(ed) at HP, and she was reviled, sending jobs overseas, laying off Americans here, and paying herself tens of millions of dollars for wrecking HP’s very successful corporate culture. She represents half of what is wrong with America.<\/p>\n

KHUNRUM EMAILS: What about the woman running against Harry Reid in Nevada….? They don’t make them any dumber than that. She can’t even put a sentence together. And that Rand Paul guy is from outer space. Come to think of it, take my name off the Tea Party list.<\/p>\n

FRED NEK EMAILS: I’ve always wanted to be governor of NY. My friend Elliot Spitzer says it’s a great way to get chicks.<\/p>\n

BTW, there was an interesting guy on Terry Gross’s radio show who compared today’s Tea Party with the John Bircher’s of 50 years ago. Those guys were right wing crackpots who dominated the conservative movement. William Buckley was instrumental in marginalizing them, and making conservativism intellectually respectable.<\/p>\n

During Goldwater’s 1960 presidential campaign, he had a campaign slogan “In your heart you know he’s right.” LBJ’s campaign responded “In your guts you know he’s nuts.” Goldwater was clobbered.<\/p>\n

Luke, going along indiscriminately with right wing crackpots like O’Donnell will, in the long term, hurt the conservative movement.<\/p>\n

The Republican party cannot be rewarded for nominating idiots. Besides, O’Donnell is a witch. She turned me into a newt. But I got better.<\/p>\n

In any event, the real problem is that there is nobody of Bill Buckley’s stature and intellect in the conservative movement today–a great pity. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
