{"id":24223,"date":"2010-09-28T17:14:31","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T01:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=24223"},"modified":"2010-09-28T17:17:09","modified_gmt":"2010-09-29T01:17:09","slug":"modern-orthodox-feminism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=24223","title":{"rendered":"Modern Orthodox Feminism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his fourth lecture on <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.jewishideas.org\/articles\/dancing-footsteps-reb-shlomo-halakhic-analysis-carl\">Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Hazan<\/a> (19th Century rabbi in Rome) for <A HREF=\"http:\/\/torahinmotion.org\">Torah in Motion<\/a>, <A HREF=\"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=2595\">Rabbi Marc B. Shapiro<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the Modern Orthodox feminists want to update things even in the Torah. They&#8217;ll say that the Torah was given in an era where people did not recognize the woman&#8217;s whole personality. They say we&#8217;re not rejecting the Torah, we&#8217;re saying the Torah never intended it.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Hazan says there is no individual obligation to <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_prayer_services\">daven<\/a> with a <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minyan\">minyan<\/a>. The community is responsible. It is a good thing to go, but there is no obligation for a woman. <\/p>\n<p>If this is correct, then you can&#8217;t say that women can&#8217;t lead public prayers because they&#8217;re not obligated when according to Rabbi Hazan, nobody is obligated to daven with a minyan. <\/p>\n<p>I pointed this out to <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judith_Hauptman\">Judith Hauptman<\/a> (feminist Talmud scholar). She had a whole article on women and minyan. She tried to show that men have this obligation and women can accept this obligation.<\/p>\n<p>I emailed her and said, why do you assume that there is any obligation for men to daven in a minyan? That would make her case easier.<\/p>\n<p>She repeated this point in response to criticism of her article but she didn&#8217;t attribute this to Marc Shapiro, when I was the one who pointed it out to her.<\/p>\n<p>We have proof that women can be counted in a minyan for megillah Esther.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his fourth lecture on Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Hazan (19th Century rabbi in Rome) for Torah in Motion, Rabbi Marc B.
