{"id":2336,"date":"2008-02-25T16:11:07","date_gmt":"2008-02-26T00:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=2336"},"modified":"2008-02-25T16:14:21","modified_gmt":"2008-02-26T00:14:21","slug":"the-right-wimps-out-on-john-mccain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=2336","title":{"rendered":"The Right Wimps Out On John McCain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2184672#isemanunivision\">Mickey Kaus writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Hear <a name=\"isemanunivision\">No <\/a>Univision, See No Univision:<\/strong> It&#8217;s dispiriting to watch the conservatives at <em>National Review<\/em> bend over backwards to <a href=\"http:\/\/corner.nationalreview.com\/post\/?q=NTMzMmUwNjMwZWZjOTMwMTZhYTNhMzlmMDExYWE4Y2E=\" target=\"_blank\">play down the <em>New York Times&#8217; <\/em>McCain-Iseman story<\/a>.<strong>  <\/strong>What if <em>before <\/em>McCain had effectively won the nomination&#8211;say, when he and Romney were contesting New Hampshire or Michigan&#8211;it had been revealed that he may have been excessively influenced by a gorgeous <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamd.com\/image\/g\/3077520?epmid=3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>lobbyist for Univision<\/strong><\/a><\/strong>, the Spanish language broadcaster with a <strong>vested financial interest in promoting bilingualism at the expense of a unifying common language<\/strong>? So much so that the lobbyist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/02\/20\/AR2008022002898_pf.html\" target=\"_blank\">boasted of her influence at meetings<\/a>? So much so that McCain&#8217;s right-hand strategist tried personally to intervene and tell her to go away? You think it might have been an issue? &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>P.S.:<\/strong> <em>National Review Online&#8217;s <\/em>David Freddoso <a href=\"http:\/\/corner.nationalreview.com\/post\/?q=NTk1NDA1ZTUwNzVlNWM0ODBiNDI3N2FjZGY5OTNiN2Q=\" target=\"_blank\">scoffs<\/a> at the idea that McCain received a mere $85,000 from Iseman&#8217;s clients since 2000, arguing that if that&#8217;s all McCain got he&#8217;s &quot;pathetic&quot; at trying to &quot;take advantage of people&quot; in his committee&#8217;s purview. Hmm. <strong>a) <\/strong>Former Univision CEO, controlling shareholder and Iseman client Jerrold Perenchio is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/Informing\/News\/PressReleases\/16890f05-0ae8-4512-a7cb-6163b081fbd2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">National FInance Co-Chair of McCain&#8217;s campaign<\/a>. Presumably he brings in more than $85,000; <strong>b) <\/strong>The worry isn&#8217;t that McCain was taking advantage of Univision, et. al. It&#8217;s rather the other way around. Or, more precisely, that this was a <strong>smarmy, mutually self-interested alliance that helped McCain and Univision in ways that maybe went beyond promoting the national interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If conservatives substitute &quot;National Education Association&quot; for &quot;Univision&quot; maybe the potential scandal will be easier to see. But at this point, McCain could be caught having an affair with <a href=\"http:\/\/michellemalkin.com\/2008\/01\/25\/john-mccains-open-borders-outreach-director-the-next-dhs-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Hernandez<\/a> and it wouldn&#8217;t bother the <em>National Review<\/em>. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backfill:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/smythesworld.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/we-happy-few-who-read-matt-welchs-epic.html\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com\/archives\/2008\/02\/mccains_lying_problem.php\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Yglesias<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vj7THjp6xnI\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Welch<\/a> notice what the <em>NR<\/em> seems to miss.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!--adsense--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mickey Kaus writes: Hear No Univision, See No Univision: It&#8217;s dispiriting to watch the conservatives at National Review bend over backwards to play down the New York Times&#8217; McCain-Iseman story.
