This week’s Torah portion is Re’eh<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Re’eh<\/b>, Reeh<\/b>, R’eih<\/b>, or Ree<\/b> (\u05e8\u05d0\u05d4 \u2014 Hebrew<\/a> for \u201csee,\u201d the first word in the parshah) is the 47th weekly Torah portion<\/a> (parshah<\/i>) in the annual Jewish<\/a> cycle of Torah reading<\/a> and the fourth in the book of Deuteronomy<\/a>. It constitutes Deuteronomy 11:26\u201316:17.<\/a> Jews<\/a> in the Diaspora<\/a> generally read it in August or early September.<\/p>\n

Jews read part of the parshah, Deuteronomy 15:19\u201316:17,<\/a> which addresses the Three Pilgrim Festivals<\/a> (Shalosh Regalim<\/i>), as the initial Torah reading on the eighth day of Passover<\/a> when it falls on a weekday and on the second day of Shavuot<\/a> when it falls on a weekday. And Jews read a larger selection from the same part of the parshah, Deuteronomy 14:22\u201316:17,<\/a> as the initial Torah reading on the eighth day of Passover when it falls on a Sabbath, on the second day of Shavuot when it falls on a Sabbath, and on Shemini Atzeret<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the parshah, Moses<\/a> set before the Israelites<\/a> the choice between blessing<\/a> and curse<\/a>. Moses instructed the Israelites in the laws<\/a> that they were to observe, including the law of a single, centralized place of worship. Moses warned against following other gods and their prophets<\/a>. And Moses set forth laws of Kashrut<\/a>, tithes<\/a>, the Sabbatical year<\/a>, the Hebrew slave, firstborn animals, and the three pilgrim festivals.<\/p>\n
