This week’s Torah portion is Veetchanan<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Va’etchanan<\/b> (\u05d5\u05d0\u05ea\u05d7\u05e0\u05df \u2014 Hebrew<\/a> for \u201cand I pleaded,\u201d the first word in the parshah) is the 45th weekly Torah portion<\/a> (parshah<\/i>) in the annual Jewish<\/a> cycle of Torah reading<\/a> and the second in the book of Deuteronomy<\/a>. It constitutes Deuteronomy 3:23\u20137:11.<\/a> Jews<\/a> in the Diaspora<\/a> generally read it in late July or August. It is always read on the special Sabbath<\/a> Shabbat Nachamu<\/i>, the Sabbath immediately after Tisha B’Av<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

As the parshah describes how the Israelites<\/a> would sin and be banished from the Land of Israel<\/a>, Jews also read part of the parshah, Deuteronomy 4:25\u201340,<\/a> as the Torah reading for the morning (Shacharit<\/i>) prayer service<\/a> on Tisha B’Av<\/i>, which commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple<\/a> and Second Temple<\/a> in Jerusalem<\/a>.<\/p>\n
