{"id":19804,"date":"2010-06-06T19:55:01","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T03:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=19804"},"modified":"2010-06-06T20:00:19","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T04:00:19","slug":"middlemarch-by-george-eliot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=19804","title":{"rendered":"Middlemarch by George Eliot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m near the end of <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middlemarch\">this novel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I saw the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middlemarch_%281994_TV_serial%29\">BBC miniseries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m struck by the shunning delivered to one of the major characters in the novel when it is discovered that he came by his money dishonorably.<\/p>\n<p>The moral standards and preoccupations displayed in this Christian 19th Century novel put much of the Orthodox Judaism I know today to shame.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s far less moral flexibility and the turning of a blind eye towards wrongdoing in <em><A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middlemarch\">Middlemarch<\/a><\/em> than in Pico-Robertson. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s enough to make me believe in the decline of the generations (that every generation since Mount Sinai is less upright).<\/p>\n<p>Last April I determined to read <em><A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middlemarch\">Middlemarch<\/a><\/em> upon learning that it was a <A HREF=\"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=8733\">preoccupation of scholar Stephen Steinlight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He told me then: &#8220;I<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m near the end of this novel.
