He is anti their victim narrative and pro ours.<\/p>\n<p>That is the tension you felt.<\/p>\n<p>II. He praises \u201cBen\u2019s heroic work these last couple weeks.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022 On the left, he says the \u201cbad views\u201d are already mainstream.<br \/>\n\u2022 He describes himself as \u201cworried, but not alarmed\u201d (13:27\u201313:34), then quickly pivots back to how strong and supportive elected Republicans have been, versus how far gone the Democrats are.<\/p>\n<p>So they are all doing a balancing act:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 \u201cWe are not whining or pleading or complaining\u201d (3:13\u20133:29)<br \/>\n\u2022 But the content is essentially: our people are under serious threat from antisemitism, anti Americanism, and institutional capture.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, they reject victimhood as a posture, while leaning hard on victimhood as diagnosis and mobilizing story.<\/p>\n<p>III. Your point: strong in group identity, strong victimhood<\/p>\n<p>You can see a basic pattern across the whole panel.<\/p>\n<p>For the groyper \/ Fuentes world<br \/>\n\u2022 Identity: white, Christian, male, \u201cbased,\u201d online, transgressive.<br \/>\n\u2022 Victim story: targeted by DEI, feminism, secularism, immigration, Jews, and \u201cthe regime.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022 Moral framing here: their victim story is described as reactive, nihilist, unserious. Shapiro calls their leader a \u201cbasement dwelling ridiculous loser\u201d whose prescriptions lead to isolation and failure (21:50\u201323:09).<\/p>\n<p>For the Jewish institutional world on stage<br \/>\n\u2022 Identity: patriotic American, proud Jew, Zionist, believer in meritocracy and Judeo Christian virtue.<br \/>\n\u2022 Victim story: perennial scapegoat of \u201cpolitics of resentment,\u201d attacked from both left and right, misrepresented by media, undermined by universities they themselves built, threatened by rising antisemitism and anti Israel politics.<br \/>\n\u2022 Moral framing: their victim story is noble and realistic. It justifies philanthropy, institution building, media projects, and a \u201cmuscular\u201d Jewish and American identity.<\/p>\n<p>Your line that \u201cthe stronger your in group identity, the stronger the victimhood\u201d lands right here:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 They are arguing for very thick, non liberal identities (Orthodox style Jewish life, Zionism, a heroic story of Israel, strong patriotic Americanism).<br \/>\n\u2022 But to justify the cost and intensity of that identity, they lean on a perception that the group is in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Senor\u2019s \u201cOctober 8 Jews\u201d language at 52:07\u201354:16 is straight out of that playbook: an adrenaline rush of Jews suddenly realizing \u201cwe are under attack\u201d and then channeling that energy into WhatsApp groups, necklaces, activism. He worries that was just adrenaline, and argues for long term investment in Jewish schools and camps. That is a move from acute victim feeling to chronic mobilization.<\/p>\n<p>IV. Shapiro\u2019s hypocrisy problem on victimhood<\/p>\n<p>You saw it early. The clearest contrast is:<\/p>\n<p>A. His message to young Jews<\/p>\n<p>Look at 21:50\u201323:09 and 1:00:37\u20131:01:41.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 He sells Judaism as a system of duties and daily obligations. \u201cYou are a loser if you don\u2019t\u201d meet them.<br \/>\n\u2022 He explicitly defines Jewish practice as the path out of meaninglessness, contrasted with Tate and Fuentes who will leave you \u201calone, joyless, with no purpose in life\u201d (24:02\u201324:07).<br \/>\n\u2022 Later he tells parents to saturate their kids in patriotic and Jewish rituals from age three, so that books at 14\u201316 just confirm what they already feel (1:00:37\u20131:01:28).<\/p>\n<p>What he does not say to Jews is \u201cyour problems are a little your fault.\u201d The threat environment is treated as objective. Antisemitism is the almost automatic next step of \u201cpolitics of resentment\u201d (9:23\u20139:28). Anti Israel sentiment is rooted in generalized hatred of meritocracy and success (29:22\u201331:10). The onus is on Jews not to whine, but the structural threat is never questioned.<\/p>\n<p>So the asymmetry is:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 White Christian victim narrative: exaggerated, coddling, a cop out.<br \/>\n\u2022 Jewish victim narrative: grounded in history, a sober description of reality, and a necessary spur to courage and responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>You can absolutely make an argument that these situations are not symmetric. But Shapiro does not really argue that in a clear principled way. He mostly relies on his audience already sharing the assumption that antisemitism is a more real and morally salient threat than anti white or anti Christian discrimination. That is why his mockery of groyper victimhood while pushing his own tribe\u2019s victim story feels so loud to you.<\/p>\n<p>V. It is a content strategy. Followers get three things:<\/p>\n<p>Secret knowledge<\/p>\n<p>Special status<\/p>\n<p>A sense that their suffering proves their importance<\/p>\n<p>Look at the Tikva event that way.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro, Weiss, and Senor tell their audience:<\/p>\n<p>You are the sane 75 percent<\/p>\n<p>You are besieged by nihilists, antisemites, and anti American radicals<\/p>\n<p>You still carry the true American and Jewish project<\/p>\n<p>That is textbook charismatic framing in Worthen\u2019s sense. He is setting the emotional temperature for the room.<\/p>\n<p>Group boundary<\/p>\n<p>Good people: patriotic Jews and their allies, the responsible right, the sane center.<\/p>\n<p>Bad people: \u201cpolitics of resentment\u201d types on left and right, the young nihilists, the groyper world, parts of the Democratic party, universities that turned on Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Even inside \u201cthe right,\u201d they draw a line between \u201cnormie conservatives\u201d and Fuentes world.<\/p>\n<p>Rhythm and symbols<\/p>\n<p>Herzl statue, talk of October 7 and \u201cOctober 8 Jews,\u201d day schools, camps, Shabbat tables, Shapiro\u2019s \u201closer vs builder\u201d language.<\/p>\n<p>Stories about shared experiences: WhatsApp groups, school boards, campus fights, philanthropy misfiring.<\/p>\n<p>What comes out the other end of this ritual chain:<\/p>\n<p>Heightened emotional energy for the Jewish pro Israel identity<\/p>\n<p>Sacred objects and practices: day school, Zionism, Shabbat, Israel\u2019s military success<\/p>\n<p>Renewed boundaries: we will not fund certain institutions, we will not accept a \u201cJudaism without Zionism\u201d split<\/p>\n<p>In Collins\u2019 terms, this is a high energy ritual for a relatively elite slice of American Jewry and their allies. It competes with other ritual chains that serve the same population. For example, Fuentes streams for young men, campus encampments for left wing kids, Tucker\u2019s show for disaffected normies, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>III. Parallel charisma: Fuentes vs Shapiro as rival ritual leaders<\/p>\n<p>Spellbound gives you a sharp way to talk about Shapiro vs Fuentes without pretending one is \u201cabout ideas\u201d and the other is not.<\/p>\n<p>Fuentes\u2019 charisma:<\/p>\n<p>Alternative world: The regime is satanic, Jews control things, the country is lost, you are the heroic remnant.<\/p>\n<p>Ritual space: long online streams, inside jokes, ironic racism that slides into earnest belief, live events where people chant \u201cGroypers\u201d and scream slurs.<\/p>\n<p>Status: you prove you are in the elect by how far you are willing to go, how \u201cbased\u201d you are.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro\u2019s charisma in this panel:<\/p>\n<p>Alternative world: The West is tottering, antisemitism is surging, but America and Israel still embody Judeo Christian virtue and meritocracy.<\/p>\n<p>Ritual space: Tikva stage, Daily Wire media, a network of schools, camps, podcasts, policy shops.<\/p>\n<p>Status: you prove you are in the elect by how committed you are to Jewish practice, Zionism, and a certain kind of respectable conservatism.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro actually draws the parallel himself when he calls Fuentes the political Andrew Tate and notes that Tate and Fuentes motivate guys by telling them \u201cyou are a bunch of cucks\u201d and then giving them a target. At 21:50\u201323:09 he shifts that tactic to his own audience:<\/p>\n<p>If you do not fulfill your daily duties, you are a loser<\/p>\n<p>If you follow Fuentes or Tate, your life gets worse<\/p>\n<p>If you follow our path, you build, marry, have kids, gain purpose<\/p>\n<p>That is still charisma. It is just respectable charisma. He is using shame and aspiration inside his own ritual world, just as Fuentes does inside his.<\/p>\n<p>From a Collins perspective, this is not hypocrisy so much as competition between two ritual chains that court the same demographic: young disaffected men on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Fuentes chain:<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients: transgression, online humor, taboo breaking, clear villains, homoerotic bonding in the chat.<\/p>\n<p>Product: high emotional energy, very tight boundaries, almost no respectable institutional power.<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro \/ Tikva chain:<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients: establishment prestige, donors, ties to Israel, \u201cwe are the sane ones,\u201d tough love to young men, anti woke credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Product: emotional energy plus money plus institutions, but less raw transgressive thrill.<\/p>\n<p>In that frame, Shapiro\u2019s attack is not just moral. It is competitive. He is trying to redirect the emotional energy of young men away from Fuentes rituals and into his own.<\/p>\n<p>IV. Strong in group identity, strong victimhood<\/p>\n<p>Your observation sits right at the intersection of Worthen and Collins.<\/p>\n<p>To make a thick group identity feel urgent, you need three things:<\/p>\n<p>A sense of chosenness<\/p>\n<p>Concrete rituals and symbols<\/p>\n<p>A story that explains why you suffer<\/p>\n<p>The panel is almost a checklist.<\/p>\n<p>Chosenness<\/p>\n<p>Jews as a peoplehood and civilization, older than modern categories.<\/p>\n<p>Israel as \u201cthe most important geopolitical power in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America as the unique project worth saving.<\/p>\n<p>The audience as the \u201cOctober 8 Jews\u201d and the 75 percent who still believe in the American project.<\/p>\n<p>Ritual and symbols<\/p>\n<p>Day schools, camps, Shabbat, Herzl, the IDF, the \u201cGenius of Israel,\u201d American patriotic holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Even the jewelry riff you hear about Star of David necklaces is a micro ritual.<\/p>\n<p>Suffering<\/p>\n<p>Antisemitism on left and right.<\/p>\n<p>Universities funded by Jews turning on them.<\/p>\n<p>Media misreporting Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Young staffers drawn to Fuentes.<\/p>\n<p>A mayoral race in New York that signals betrayal.<\/p>\n<p>The thicker the identity gets, the more the suffering part has to scale up to justify it. Otherwise it looks like overkill.<\/p>\n<p>That is why Shapiro has to mock white Christian male victimhood while insisting that Jewish victimhood is real and structural. If both victim stories are equally legit, then the claim that Jews need special networks, day schools, and media projects starts to look like just another tribal defense mechanism among many. He needs his tribes\u2019 suffering to be special, even if he would not phrase it that way.<\/p>\n<p>Fuentes does the same thing in reverse. He treats Jewish victim claims as fake or weaponized and white Christian victim claims as real and neglected.<\/p>\n<p>Both sides need the competition\u2019s victimhood to be illegitimate. If it is all just tribes nursing grievances, charisma loses some of its moral glamour.<\/p>\n<p>V.
