The light, the ocean, the open space\u2014those are invitations, but they\u2019re also exposures. The same sun that flatters you will bleach you out if you stay too long. The same openness that promises freedom can leave you unanchored.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what you\u2019re getting at with \u201csteely.\u201d There\u2019s a hardness built into the landscape and culture\u2014competition, heat, earthquakes, distance. It\u2019s a place where image and willpower intertwine. People go there to test how much of themselves is real when the dream starts to glare.<\/p>\n<p>It draws a certain kind of temperament: ambitious, self-inventing, restless. But the test cuts both ways. Some people find out what they\u2019re made of; others find out they were mostly costume. Southern California gives you the stage and the light, but it doesn\u2019t provide the substance.
