{"id":132800,"date":"2020-07-09T08:42:19","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T16:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=132800"},"modified":"2020-07-09T08:42:19","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T16:42:19","slug":"katy-perry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=132800","title":{"rendered":"Katy Perry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fDTouU0iABA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><A HREF=\"https:\/\/www.unz.com\/akarlin\/california-isnt-the-sjwtopia-of-right-wing-fantasies\/#comment-3981774\">Comment<\/a>: I was thinking of lifeless pop songs now, is \u201cThe One That Got Away\u201d by Katy Perry.<\/p>\n<p>Girls love singing this at karaoke night, and it sounds like a simulacra of a song which was famous.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason it sounds so like a \u201cclassic song\u201d is the harmony is quite classic \u2013 the same one as first half of chorus of famous song by Queen \u201cWe are the Champions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Why is song so empty and lifeless, despite the beautiful harmony?<\/p>\n<p>Music is not matching the meaning of the words she is trying to express \u2013 (\u201cSteal your parents liquor and climb to the roof\u201d \u2013 on such sad (I) to (iii) change) and she sings randomly sad phrases on the most optimistic harmonies (\u201cI\u2019d be losing you\u201d (during the vi-IV-I).<\/p>\n<p>For example at 0:56 \u2013 \u201cthe one that got away\u201d she sings over the most spiritually positive harmony change (vi-IV)<\/p>\n<p>at 2:40 (\u201cand now I pay the price.. in another life\u201d) singing over this euphoric (V-IV)<\/p>\n<p>The subdominant (IV) chord in this harmonic progression after (iii-vi) is really beautiful and musically says something spiritual like \u201clife is beautiful everything will be ok\u201d. It\u2019s the same as Beatle\u2019s \u201cLet it be let it be\u201d. Or Bob Marley \u201cNo woman no cry\u201d.<br \/>\n\u2013<br \/>\nMeaning of words and harmony do not have to match exactly, but they at least need to have an interesting relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas here music undermines the words \u2013 but in an uninteresting way which makes her sound insincere and \u201clifeless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s clear Katy Perry doesn\u2019t write the words as the same time as the music. She is tone-deaf to the meaning of the music that she sings over, even while the music itself is using cool harmonies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013<br \/>\nKaty Perry is using some beautiful chord progressions, not bad melodies, (which is why she is popular) but then pasting lyrics in way which makes those lyrics sound insincere and lifeless.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Comment: I was thinking of lifeless pop songs now, is \u201cThe One That Got Away\u201d by Katy Perry.
