* As Gavin de Becker writes in The Gift of Fear, \u201cWhen you worry, ask yourself, \u2018What am I choosing to not see right now?\u2019 What important things are you missing because you chose worry over introspection, alertness or wisdom?\u201d
\nAnother way of putting it: Does getting upset provide you with more options?
\nSometimes it does. But in this instance?
\nNo, I suppose not.
\nWell, then.<\/p>\n

* Does what happened keep you from acting with justice, generosity, self-control, sanity, prudence, honesty, humility, straightforwardness?<\/p>\n

* Don\u2019t let the force of an impression when it first hit you knock you off your feet; just say to it: Hold on a moment; let me see who you are and what you represent. Let me put you to the test. \u2014EPICTETUS<\/p>\n

* The observing eye sees events, clear of distractions, exaggerations, and misperceptions. The perceiving eye sees \u201cinsurmountable obstacles\u201d or \u201cmajor setbacks\u201d or even just \u201cissues.\u201d It brings its own issues to the fight. The former is helpful, the latter is not.<\/p>\n

* Epictetus told his students, when they\u2019d quote some great thinker, to picture themselves observing the person having sex. It\u2019s funny, you should try it the next time someone intimidates you or makes you feel insecure.
