The first is Paul Gottfried\u2026\u201d (The second: <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/is-the-spectre-of-trump-and-sam-francis-haunting-davos?content=dock%20here?%20Who\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/is-the-spectre-of-trump-and-sam-francis-haunting-davos?content=dock%20here?%20Who\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/is-the-spectre-of-trump-and-sam-francis-haunting-davos?content=dock%20here?%20Who']);\">the late Sam Francis.<\/a>) Although I don\u2019t classify myself as part of the Alt-Right, Hawley notes that my scholarly work certainly influenced many people on the Alt-Right\u2014especially his  [my] books and columns critiquing the conservative movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_9'  wcount='34' ><span  class='contents' >I was also \u201csomething of a mentor to <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-majority-strategy\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-majority-strategy\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-majority-strategy']);\">Richard Spencer,<\/a> who coined the term \u2018Alt-Right,\u2019 and he [I] wrote articles for both <em>Taki\u2019s Magazine <\/em>and <em><a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/richard-spencer-s-website-altright-com-de-registered-at-the-request-of-black-lady-civil-rights-lawyer\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/richard-spencer-s-website-altright-com-de-registered-at-the-request-of-black-lady-civil-rights-lawyer\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/richard-spencer-s-website-altright-com-de-registered-at-the-request-of-black-lady-civil-rights-lawyer']);\">Alternative Right,<\/a> <\/em>where the term was first popularized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_10'  wcount='60' ><span  class='contents' >George, to his credit, does dissociate me from some of the more unsavory positions attached to the Alt-Right. He points out that I am \u201cnot an anti-Semite,\u201d which (apart from the fact <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/a-jewish-conservative-wonders-is-free-speech-really-a-jewish-tradition\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/a-jewish-conservative-wonders-is-free-speech-really-a-jewish-tradition\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/a-jewish-conservative-wonders-is-free-speech-really-a-jewish-tradition']);\">that I am Jewish<\/a>) is certainly true providing one accepts H.L. Mencken\u2019s <a title=\"https:\/\/attackthesystem.com\/2011\/06\/29\/gottfried-on-mencken\/\" href=\"https:\/\/attackthesystem.com\/2011\/06\/29\/gottfried-on-mencken\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/attackthesystem.com\/2011\/06\/29\/gottfried-on-mencken\/']);\">definition<\/a> that \u201can anti-Semite is someone who dislikes Jews more than is absolutely necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_11'  wcount='28' ><span  class='contents' >George also correctly notes that I \u201creject white nationalism,\u201d for all the good it\u2019s done me in winning favor from the obsessively virtue-signaling members of Conservatism Inc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_12'  wcount='127' ><span  class='contents' >My own relations with the Alt-Right took a noticeable plunge from about the time that the Left began smearing Donald Trump as the voice of the Alt-Right. That was also around the time that Richard Spencer began identifying his movement more explicitly with white nationalism. Then last year came the clash at Charlottesville. This brought news coverage that was less than objective. In its wake, I found that <a title=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/paul-gottfried-dont-call-me-the-godfather-of-those-alt-right-neo-nazis-im-jewish\" href=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/paul-gottfried-dont-call-me-the-godfather-of-those-alt-right-neo-nazis-im-jewish\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/paul-gottfried-dont-call-me-the-godfather-of-those-alt-right-neo-nazis-im-jewish']);\">I had to protect myself<\/a> against a Canadian celebrity <a title=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/robert-fulford-how-the-alt-rights-godfather-transformed-our-world-not-in-a-good-way\" href=\"http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/robert-fulford-how-the-alt-rights-godfather-transformed-our-world-not-in-a-good-way\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/robert-fulford-how-the-alt-rights-godfather-transformed-our-world-not-in-a-good-way']);\">who claimed<\/a> in the <em>National Post<\/em> that I was the spiritual force behind a neo-Nazi riot. Never mind that <a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/alt-right-not-self-destructing-its-just-been-mugged-by-government-antifa-alliance-establishment-conservatives-too-but-theyre-too-stupid-to-notice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/alt-right-not-self-destructing-its-just-been-mugged-by-government-antifa-alliance-establishment-conservatives-too-but-theyre-too-stupid-to-notice\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.vdare.com\/articles\/alt-right-not-self-destructing-its-just-been-mugged-by-government-antifa-alliance-establishment-conservatives-too-but-theyre-too-stupid-to-notice']);\">said riot took place<\/a> when <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/anarchotyrannyincville\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/anarchotyrannyincville\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/anarchotyrannyincville']);\">well-armed \u201cAnti-fascists\u201d<\/a> attacked right-wing demonstrators who had a legal right to assemble; and after the police failed to protect those who were exercising their legal right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But while I have criticized the Alt-Right, it is utterly dishonest for <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/conservatism-inc-on-trump-forget-2016-election-the-scam-must-go-on\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/conservatism-inc-on-trump-forget-2016-election-the-scam-must-go-on\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/conservatism-inc-on-trump-forget-2016-election-the-scam-must-go-on']);\">Conservatism, Inc<\/a>. to excoriate the Alt-Right as racist. Fox News is awash in <a title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/06\/26\/professor-fired-after-defending-blacks-only-event-on-fox-news-i-was-publicly-lynched-she-says\/?noredirect=on\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/06\/26\/professor-fired-after-defending-blacks-only-event-on-fox-news-i-was-publicly-lynched-she-says\/?noredirect=on\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/06\/26\/professor-fired-after-defending-blacks-only-event-on-fox-news-i-was-publicly-lynched-she-says\/?noredirect=on']);\">black race hustlers,<\/a> with whom its All-Stars engage in respectful dialogue. Why are white nationalists or white race realists off-limits? And why does Conservatism, Inc. not treat its Right-wing dissenters as indulgently as those who deviate from it from the Left, e.g. <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/in-trumps-america-is-this-the-end-of-george-will\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/in-trumps-america-is-this-the-end-of-george-will\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/in-trumps-america-is-this-the-end-of-george-will']);\">George Will,<\/a> Goldberg <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/jonah-goldberg-to-christian-republicans-disappear\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/jonah-goldberg-to-christian-republicans-disappear\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/jonah-goldberg-to-christian-republicans-disappear']);\">himself<\/a> and other <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jennifer-rubin-doubles-down-on-brooks-dying-white-america-smear\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jennifer-rubin-doubles-down-on-brooks-dying-white-america-smear\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jennifer-rubin-doubles-down-on-brooks-dying-white-america-smear']);\">Never-Trumpers?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_14'  wcount='43' ><span  class='contents' >Of course we know the answer: <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/david-frum-uses-manchester-to-attack-trump\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/david-frum-uses-manchester-to-attack-trump\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/david-frum-uses-manchester-to-attack-trump']);\">professional token conservatives<\/a> prize good relations with the MSM, with which they exchange favors while proclaiming anti-racist respectability.  It is no longer the <a title=\"http:\/\/pblosser.blogspot.com\/2017\/06\/no-enemies-to-left-pas-dennemis-gauche.html\" href=\"http:\/\/pblosser.blogspot.com\/2017\/06\/no-enemies-to-left-pas-dennemis-gauche.html\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/pblosser.blogspot.com\/2017\/06\/no-enemies-to-left-pas-dennemis-gauche.html']);\">French Left<\/a> but <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/derbyshire-weissberg-and-dog-whistling\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/derbyshire-weissberg-and-dog-whistling\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/derbyshire-weissberg-and-dog-whistling']);\">Conservatism Inc.<\/a> that favors the motto \u201cno enemies to the Left.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_15'  wcount='69' ><span  class='contents' >That said, I\u2019ll make an exception for the \u201cantifascist\u201d rioters on American campuses who rage against neoconservative speakers just as they do against Richard Spencer. But these demonstrations have been a godsend for their targets and neocon sponsors. They have created media martyrs, who after their cancelled speeches can revel in the praise of their TV colleagues.[<em><a title=\"https:\/\/www.nratv.com\/videos\/stinchfield-ben-shapiro-conservatives-under-attack-on-college-campuses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nratv.com\/videos\/stinchfield-ben-shapiro-conservatives-under-attack-on-college-campuses\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.nratv.com\/videos\/stinchfield-ben-shapiro-conservatives-under-attack-on-college-campuses']);\">Ben Shapiro: Conservatives Under Attack on College Campuses,<\/a> NRA.tv, October 25, 2017<\/em>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_16'  wcount='58' ><span  class='contents' >And let\u2019s not be hard on the Alt-Right and its contending internet stars. Given the glaring imbalance of power between the current Left and any serious Right, even a cleaned-up version of the Alt-Right would not likely have access to the MSM\u2014especially after Trump was elected and the Alt-Right was no longer useful to smear him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_17'  wcount='27' ><span  class='contents' >In fact, I can\u2019t imagine any movement to the right of Conservatism, Inc. that would do better than the Alt-Right leaders in achieving a national presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_18'  wcount='42' ><span  class='contents' >Of course, Neocons, <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jacob-heilbrunn-in-ny-review-of-books-donald-trumps-brains\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jacob-heilbrunn-in-ny-review-of-books-donald-trumps-brains\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/jacob-heilbrunn-in-ny-review-of-books-donald-trumps-brains']);\">West Coast Straussians<\/a> and the GOP Establishment have predictably seized Trump\u2019s presidency because they were the \u201cconservative\u201d powerbrokers when Trump became president. It was always likely that the <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/national-review-attacks-romney-and-the-old-right\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/national-review-attacks-romney-and-the-old-right\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/national-review-attacks-romney-and-the-old-right']);\">Old Right,<\/a> Alt-Right or Dissenting Right would be shouldered aside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_19'  wcount='39' ><span  class='contents' >The question is whether this imbalance of power will survive. I suspect the current situation may not last. Growing racial tensions, reckless immigration and a further weakening of already-weakened social bonds could all help the Alt-Right expand its following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_20'  wcount='39' ><span  class='contents' >Part of the Alt Right\u2019s eventual success may come from its anti-traditionalism. The Alt-Right is mostly (but not entirely) anti-Christian and advances a Nietzschean or neo-pagan perspective. It is thereby in sync with the growing secularism of millennials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And the Alt-Right doesn\u2019t wear itself out trying to defend the <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/nyt-article-hurts-lady-writers-feelings\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/nyt-article-hurts-lady-writers-feelings\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/nyt-article-hurts-lady-writers-feelings']);\">traditional bourgeois family.<\/a> It appears to be made up largely of young, unattached bloggers. Most of those Alt-Right publicists I read focus on racial conflict or the struggle between civilizations; and they push these themes far more frankly and with less careerist backtracking than the well-paid propagandists of Conservatism, Inc. They also cite telling statistics about racial and gender differences; and they pride themselves on their openness to science as well as on their sometimes vaguely defined \u201cradical traditionalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_22'  wcount='42' ><span  class='contents' >The Alt-Right belongs to a post-conservative Right. But the \u201cconservatism\u201d it rejects is not even recognizable as such. What the Alt-Right rejects is a bogus Right that misleadingly calls itself \u201cconservative\u201d but which in most ways is indistinguishable from the historic Left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_23'  wcount='68' ><span  class='contents' >One signature Alt-Right position (and one that Hawley traces back to both <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/eleven-years-after-his-death-sam-francis-speaks-on-the-current-crisis-of-the-elite\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/eleven-years-after-his-death-sam-francis-speaks-on-the-current-crisis-of-the-elite\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/eleven-years-after-his-death-sam-francis-speaks-on-the-current-crisis-of-the-elite']);\">Sam Francis<\/a> and to me) is a willingness to <a title=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/beautiful-losers-essays-on-failure-american-conservatism\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/beautiful-losers-essays-on-failure-american-conservatism\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/beautiful-losers-essays-on-failure-american-conservatism']);\">mock<\/a> Conservatism, Inc. for its servile kowtowing to minorities. Alt-Right publicists mock \u201cconservatives\u201d who call for <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/morris-dees-heritage-nikki-haleys-political-expediency\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/morris-dees-heritage-nikki-haleys-political-expediency\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/morris-dees-heritage-nikki-haleys-political-expediency']);\">dismantling<\/a> Confederate monuments, promote the obligatory celebration of MLK as a \u201cconservative\u201d titan (after decades of <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/buckley-on-mlk-1987\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/buckley-on-mlk-1987\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/buckley-on-mlk-1987']);\">conservatives<\/a> calling King a <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-king-holiday-and-its-meaning-0\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-king-holiday-and-its-meaning-0\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/the-king-holiday-and-its-meaning-0']);\">philandering communist fellow-traveler<\/a>) and advocate \u201cmoderate\u201d as opposed to \u201cradical feminism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_24'  wcount='43' ><span  class='contents' >Unlike Conservatism, Inc., the Alt-Right avoids mealy-mouthed celebrations of \u201clegal immigration\u201d and \u201cdiversity\u201d when it opposes illegal immigration. Instead it demands an end to all immigration that is not compatible with what America was as a nation up until a few decades ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_25'  wcount='45' ><span  class='contents' >It is hard to miss the family resemblance between the Alt-Right and various European identitarian movements. Several years ago, when I attended a conference in Stockholm sponsored by Arktos Press, I noticed Swedish and French identitarian spokesmen cheek by jowl with their Alt-Right American counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_26'  wcount='50' ><span  class='contents' >A difference between the two groups, however, concerns their concept of the uncongenial \u201cOther.\u201d European identitarians are principally concerned with keeping out Muslims and limiting the influence of Cultural Marxists in their societies. The Alt-Right has a much stronger racial edge, which may reflect the peculiarities of the American past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_27'  wcount='86' ><span  class='contents' >Still, on the racial front, one finds more variation in the Alt Right than the \u201cfake media\u201d might lead us to believe. Jared Taylor and John Derbyshire, among others who have influenced the Alt-Right, characterize themselves as \u201crace realists\u201d but reject the \u201cwhite nationalist\u201d label. Some younger Alt-Right bloggers like <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/mike-cernovich-examines-carlos-slimnyt-connection-with-help-from-vdare-com\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/mike-cernovich-examines-carlos-slimnyt-connection-with-help-from-vdare-com\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/posts\/mike-cernovich-examines-carlos-slimnyt-connection-with-help-from-vdare-com']);\">Mike Cernovich<\/a> don\u2019t seem particularly interested in race, except to whatever extent political and culture elites weaponize it against whites. Cernovich has famously <a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tguFKlHeYdE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tguFKlHeYdE\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tguFKlHeYdE']);\">trained his fire<\/a> on the \u201cdeep state\u201d and the evils of feminism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_28'  wcount='44' ><span  class='contents' >Another Alt-Right spokesman, <a title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vox_Day\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vox_Day\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vox_Day']);\">Theodor Beale<\/a> a.k.a. <a title=\"http:\/\/voxday.blogspot.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/voxday.blogspot.com\/\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/voxday.blogspot.com\/']);\">Vox Day<\/a> has tried to integrate \u201crace realism\u201d into a reactionary posture, including anti-feminism and the defense of Evangelical Christianity. Presumably only a regime change, one that Trump has not yet brought about, can alter this trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_30'  wcount='32' ><span  class='contents' >The Conservative Establishment would never make peace with any serious Right, at least not one that offended the global corporate capitalists, <a title=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/casino-boss-and-amnesty-tout-sheldon-adelson-competition-for-thee-but-not-for-me\" href=\"https:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/casino-boss-and-amnesty-tout-sheldon-adelson-competition-for-thee-but-not-for-me\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/vdare.com\/articles\/casino-boss-and-amnesty-tout-sheldon-adelson-competition-for-thee-but-not-for-me']);\">Zionist casino-owners<\/a>, and arms merchants who <a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/08\/us\/politics\/think-tanks-research-and-corporate-lobbying.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/08\/us\/politics\/think-tanks-research-and-corporate-lobbying.html\" onclick=\"javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/08\/us\/politics\/think-tanks-research-and-corporate-lobbying.html']);\">payroll our GOP think tanks.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p  class='container'  id='p_1_31'  wcount='31' ><span  class='contents' >But what this assumes is a continuation of the present moment.
