–Not shared political rights<\/p>\n
–but pre-existing ethnic characteristics<\/p>\n
3. European ethnic nationalism <\/p>\n
is exemplified by Germany’s reaction to Napoleon\u2019s invasion in 1806<\/p>\n
–And Germany’s “Romantic” reaction against<\/p>\n
the French ideal of the nation-state<\/p>\n
4. The German ideal of ethnic nationalism appealed to the peoples<\/p>\n
of 19th century Europe who were under imperial domination<\/p>\n
–Poles & Baltic peoples under the Russian Empire<\/p>\n
–Serbs under Turkish rule (Ottoman Empire)<\/p>\n
