Loomer\u2019s performance was another notch on the belt in a budding career of far-right provocation. It earned her a spot on Hannity, instant \u201calt-right\u201d cachet online and the admiration of her arresting officers. (She was charged with misdemeanor trespassing and disorderly conduct. Loomer reported that at the station the officers told her that her mugshot was \u201cthe nicest mugshot they\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people don\u2019t really have the balls to get onstage and protest,\u201d said Loomer, who is 24. \u201cBut the fact that I\u2019m a conservative, and I\u2019m a woman, and I\u2019m nonviolent, and I\u2019m just a New York resident, it makes a statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loomer is one of the few women \u2014 and one of only a handful of Jews \u2014 in the far right\u2019s cast of characters. She is styling herself as a media voice that trumpets Jewish causes in one breath and decries \u201cMuslim \u201crefugee\u201d predators\u201d in the next. Just don\u2019t slot her into the \u201calt-right,\u201d the catch-all term for far-right Trump supporters steeped in internet culture. She\u2019s part of a Twitter-savvy crew of Trump fans that are trying to use the tactics of the \u201calt-right\u201d \u2014 memes, social media targeting and aggressive misinformation \u2014 to purge the far right of pervasive anti-Semitism while upholding the sanctity of white European culture.<\/p>\n

In the backlash to the protest, people on Twitter from both the far left and the far right attacked Loomer on the basis of her Jewish identity. David Duke, former leader of the Klu Klux Klan, called her \u201cclassic controlled opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh, this stupid kike who stormed the stage of \u2018Julius Caesar,\u2019 \u2018Oh, the Jews are always up to dirty tricks,\u2019\u201d Loomer said. \u201cThe only reason they\u2019re attacking me is because I\u2019m Jewish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the \u201calt-right\u201d has never claimed unity, anti-Semitism has frequently proved a divisive issue for its biggest personalities, who have clashed numerous times over allegations of anti-Semitism and counter-allegations of philo-Semitism. In December, the meme wiz known on the internet as Baked Alaska was barred from the DeploraBall, a far-right inauguration party, for his history of anti-Semitic tweets. More recently, Loomer and a friend backed out of appearances at an \u201calt-right\u201d rally in Washington in June, after Richard Spencer, the white nationalist icon and lover of Nazi salutes, was added to the list of speakers.<\/p>\n

Loomer and the friend, the conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, organized a counter-rally at the exact same time in front of the White House. Many saw the dueling rallies as a sign that the \u201calt-right\u201d as it was once known is now dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re allowed to think the way they do,\u201d Loomer said of Spencer and Baked Alaska. \u201cI respected their right to say what they want to say, even if it\u2019s anti-Jewish. But I\u2019m not going to participate in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since June, people in Loomer\u2019s circle \u2014 which includes Posobiec, the \u201cmeme mastermind\u201d Mike Cernovich and the White House Press Corps \u201ctroll\u201d Lucian Wintrich \u2014 have tried to rebrand in order to distance themselves from the \u201calt-right.\u201d Loomer personally favors \u201cNew Right,\u201d a term suggested by Cernovich.<\/p>\n

Spencer said that the divide between the \u201calt-right\u201d and Loomer\u2019s so-called \u201cNew Right\u201d is \u201ca very serious divide that is ideological and political\u201d \u2014 and nothing new.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis divide was probably masked in 2016 because we were all on the Trump train,\u201d Spencer said. \u201cAfter the campaign ended,this very stark division has emerged.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
