(JTA)<\/a> \u2014 More than 1,500 U.S. rabbis signed a letter calling on the incoming Trump administration to maintain the federal refugee resettlement program.<\/p>\n HIAS, a global Jewish nonprofit that protects refugees, released the letter on Wednesday. Formerly known as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the agency was founded in 1881 to help Jewish immigrants fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n Signers of the letter included rabbis from every major denomination.<\/p>\n \u201cJewish history bears witness to the critical choice facing our country: whether to rescue those in need or to construct barriers to keep them out,\u201d it reads. \u201cJews have seen America at its best, and we know what it looks like for our country to provide the chance at a new beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n The letter also warns about what could happen if the United States closes its doors to refugees.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have seen xenophobia overwhelm our nation\u2019s capacity for compassion, and we have seen the doors slam shut in our greatest hours of need,\u201d it says. \u201cSevere restrictions kept countless Jewish immigrants in danger, and too many people faced death in Europe after being turned away from these shores.<\/p>\n \u201cAs rabbis, we take seriously the biblical mandate to \u2018welcome the stranger.\u2019 Grounded in our history and values, we will continue to raise our voices in support of refugees and call on our great nation to uphold a legacy of welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Would they recommend that Israel take in people who hate it?
