He writes about <a href=\"\/info\/Race_(classification_of_human_beings)\" title=\"Race (classification of human beings)\" class=\"mw-redirect\">race<\/a> relations, gender issues, politics, immigration, <a href=\"\/info\/IQ\" title=\"IQ\" class=\"mw-redirect\">IQ<\/a>, <a href=\"\/info\/Genetics\" title=\"Genetics\">genetics<\/a>, <a href=\"\/info\/Movies\" title=\"Movies\" class=\"mw-redirect\">movies<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/info\/Sports\" title=\"Sports\" class=\"mw-redirect\">sports<\/a>. As of 2014, Sailer stopped publishing his personal blog on his own website and shifted it to the Unz Review, an online publication by <a href=\"\/info\/Ron_Unz\" title=\"Ron Unz\">Ron Unz<\/a> that described itself as an &#8220;alternative media selection&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sailer has generally held that <a href=\"\/info\/Nature_versus_nurture\" title=\"Nature versus nurture\">nature versus nurture<\/a> debates have worked out scientifically that the two sides are &#8220;about equally important: maybe fifty-fifty&#8221; such that the &#8220;glass is roughly half-full and half-empty.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-epigenetics_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-epigenetics-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> He&#8217;s thus often written on issues of <a href=\"\/info\/Race_and_intelligence\" title=\"Race and intelligence\">race and intelligence<\/a> as well as <a href=\"\/info\/Gender_and_intelligence\" title=\"Gender and intelligence\" class=\"mw-redirect\">gender and intelligence<\/a> issues, arguing that social groups face inborn advantages and disadvantages but that <a href=\"\/info\/American_conservatism\" title=\"American conservatism\" class=\"mw-redirect\">conservative<\/a> socio-economic policies can improve things for all.<\/p>\n<p>Sailer grew up in <a href=\"\/info\/Studio_City,_Los_Angeles\" title=\"Studio City, Los Angeles\">Studio City, Los Angeles<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> As a child, Sailer appeared alongside four other grade school students on the &#8220;Kids Say the Darndest Things&#8221; segment of <i><a href=\"\/info\/Art_Linkletter%27s_House_Party\" title=\"Art Linkletter's House Party\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Art Linkletter&#8217;s House Party<\/a><\/i>. He majored in economics, history, and management at <a href=\"\/info\/Rice_University\" title=\"Rice University\">Rice University<\/a> (BA, 1980).<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> He earned an <a href=\"\/info\/MBA\" title=\"MBA\" class=\"mw-redirect\">MBA<\/a> from <a href=\"\/info\/UCLA\" title=\"UCLA\" class=\"mw-redirect\">UCLA<\/a> in 1982 with two concentrations: Finance and Marketing.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> In 1982 he moved from Los Angeles to Chicago,<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> and from then until 1985 he managed BehaviorScan test markets for Information Resources, Inc.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> In 1996, he was diagnosed with <a href=\"\/info\/Non-Hodgkin_lymphoma\" title=\"Non-Hodgkin lymphoma\">non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/a>, and in February 1997, he was treated with <a href=\"\/info\/Rituxan\" title=\"Rituxan\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Rituxan<\/a>. He has been in <a href=\"\/info\/Remission_(medicine)#Remission\" title=\"Remission (medicine)\" class=\"mw-redirect\">remission<\/a> since those treatments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> He became a full-time journalist in 2000<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> and left Chicago for California.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Writing_career\">Writing career<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From 1994 to 1998, Sailer worked as a columnist for the conservative magazine <i><a href=\"\/info\/National_Review\" title=\"National Review\">National Review<\/a><\/i>, in which he has since been sporadically published.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In August 1999, he debated <a href=\"\/info\/Steven_Levitt\" title=\"Steven Levitt\">Steve Levitt<\/a> at <a href=\"\/info\/Slate.com\" title=\"Slate.com\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Slate.com<\/a>, calling into question Levitt&#8217;s hypothesis, which would appear in the 2005 book <i><a href=\"\/info\/Freakonomics\" title=\"Freakonomics\">Freakonomics<\/a><\/i>, that <a href=\"\/info\/Legalized_abortion_and_crime_effect\" title=\"Legalized abortion and crime effect\">legalized abortion in America reduced crime<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sailer, along with <a href=\"\/info\/Charles_Murray_(political_scientist)\" title=\"Charles Murray (political scientist)\">Charles Murray<\/a> and <a href=\"\/info\/John_McGinnis\" title=\"John McGinnis\">John McGinnis<\/a>, was described as an &#8220;evolutionary conservative&#8221; in a 1999 <i><a href=\"\/info\/National_Review\" title=\"National Review\">National Review<\/a><\/i> cover story by <a href=\"\/info\/John_O%27Sullivan_(columnist)\" title=\"John O'Sullivan (columnist)\">John O&#8217;Sullivan<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup> Sailer&#8217;s work frequently appears at <a href=\"\/info\/Taki%27s_Magazine\" title=\"Taki's Magazine\">Taki&#8217;s Magazine<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup> and <a href=\"\/info\/Alternative_Right\" title=\"Alternative Right\">Alternative Right<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup> while Sailer&#8217;s analyses have been cited by newspapers such as <i><a href=\"\/info\/The_Washington_Times\" title=\"The Washington Times\">The Washington Times<\/a><\/i>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-wt_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-wt-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup> <i><a href=\"\/info\/The_New_York_Times\" title=\"The New York Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/i>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-nyt_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-nyt-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> the <i><a href=\"\/info\/San_Francisco_Chronicle\" title=\"San Francisco Chronicle\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"\/info\/The_Times\" title=\"The Times\">The Times<\/a><\/i> of London.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sfgate_18-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-sfgate-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup> He has been featured as a guest on <i><a href=\"\/info\/The_Political_Cesspool\" title=\"The Political Cesspool\">The Political Cesspool<\/a><\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sailer&#8217;s January 2003 article &#8220;Cousin Marriage Conundrum&#8221;, published in <i>The American Conservative<\/i>, argued that nationbuilding in Iraq would likely fail because of the high degree of <a href=\"\/info\/Consanguinity\" title=\"Consanguinity\">consanguinity<\/a> among Iraqis due to the common practice of <a href=\"\/info\/Cousin_marriage\" title=\"Cousin marriage\">cousin marriage<\/a>. This article has been republished in <i>The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2004<\/i>, and in <i>One World, Many Cultures<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>After the <a href=\"\/info\/United_States_presidential_election,_2004\" title=\"United States presidential election, 2004\">2004 US election<\/a>, Sailer discovered a very strong correlation between voting patterns and fertility rates. He described the fertility link in an article in <a href=\"\/info\/The_American_Conservative\" title=\"The American Conservative\">The American Conservative<\/a>: &#8220;Among the 50 states plus Washington, D.C., white total fertility correlates at a remarkably strong 0.86 level with Bush\u2019s percentage of the 2004 vote. (In 2000, the correlation was 0.85.)&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup> Writing in the <a href=\"\/info\/New_York_Times\" title=\"New York Times\" class=\"mw-redirect\">New York Times<\/a>, pundit <a href=\"\/info\/David_Brooks_(journalist)\" title=\"David Brooks (journalist)\">David Brooks<\/a> referred to this article as showing the &#8220;surprising political correlations&#8221; of what he dubbed &#8220;natalism&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup> Sailer later discovered a slightly stronger correlation between marriage rates and voting, and dubbed his theory of modern American voting as &#8220;Affordable Family Formation&#8221;: &#8220;a state\u2019s voting proclivities are now dominated by the relative presence or absence of affordable family formation.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup> The correlation between home prices, marriage rates, and voting was verified by George Hawley at the University of Houston, using county-level data for the 2000 election.<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2008, Sailer published his only book, <i>America&#8217;s Half-Blood Prince<\/i>, an analysis of <a href=\"\/info\/Barack_Obama\" title=\"Barack Obama\">Barack Obama<\/a> based on his memoir <i><a href=\"\/info\/Dreams_from_My_Father\" title=\"Dreams from My Father\">Dreams from My Father<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Sailer is the founder of an online discussion forum called <i>Human Biodiversity Discussion Group<\/i>, whose members he has described as &#8220;top scientists and public intellectuals&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-26\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-27\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Views_and_criticism\">Views and criticism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sailer cites studies that say, on average, blacks and Mexicans in America <a href=\"\/info\/Race_and_intelligence\" title=\"Race and intelligence\">have lower IQs than whites<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-28\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-29\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup> and that <a href=\"\/info\/Ashkenazi_Jews\" title=\"Ashkenazi Jews\">Ashkenazi Jews<\/a> and <a href=\"\/info\/Northeast_Asia\" title=\"Northeast Asia\">Northeast Asians<\/a> have higher IQs than whites.<sup id=\"cite_ref-30\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-30\">[30]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-31\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup> He says that prosperity helped blacks close the IQ gap.<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template Template-Fact\" style=\"white-space:nowrap;\">[<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citation_needed\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"wikipedia:Citation needed\"><span title=\"This claim needs references to reliable sources. (April 2011)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup> He suggests that a problem with mass immigration of non-white <a href=\"\/info\/Mestizo\" title=\"Mestizo\">Mestizo<\/a> Mexicans into America is that native-born whites in the US will become a master <a href=\"\/info\/Caste\" title=\"Caste\">caste<\/a> to a non-white servant caste.<sup id=\"cite_ref-32\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-32\">[32]<\/a><\/sup> He also considers that &#8220;for at least some purposes\u2014race actually is a highly useful and reasonable classification,&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-33\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-33\">[33]<\/a><\/sup> such as providing a very rough rule-of-thumb for the fact that various population groups may inherit differences in body chemistry that affect how the body uses certain pharmaceutical products,<sup id=\"cite_ref-34\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-34\">[34]<\/a><\/sup> for &#8220;finessing&#8221; Affirmative Action when that&#8217;s economically convenient,<sup id=\"cite_ref-35\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-35\">[35]<\/a><\/sup> and for political <a href=\"\/info\/Gerrymandering\" title=\"Gerrymandering\">gerrymandering<\/a>. Sailer has also argued that Hispanic immigration is &#8220;recreating the racial hierarchy of Mexico&#8221; in California:<sup id=\"cite_ref-36\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-36\">[36]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\">\n<p>While upwardly mobile Mexican-Americans marry blonde Anglos, downwardly mobile white men wed Mexicans. Now, there is no doubt plenty to be said for getting hitched to a Mexican lady. They probably tend to make better mothers, homemakers, and cooks than the leggy blonde careerists who, however, are so much more in demand in Southern California. But sadly, there is a big social cost to Anglo-Hispanic marriages\u2014which raises severe doubts about America&#8217;s ability to assimilate Latino immigrants. As pro-immigration\/pro-assimilation researcher Gregory Rodriguez admits, &#8220;Surprisingly, in most homes headed by an Anglo\/Latino couple, Spanish becomes the household language.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thus, those L.A. blue-collar whites who don&#8217;t flee to Utah will tend to assimilate genetically and culturally into Latino culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"\/info\/Rodolfo_Acu%C3%B1a\" title=\"Rodolfo Acu\u00f1a\">Rodolfo Acu\u00f1a<\/a>, a <a href=\"\/info\/Chicano\" title=\"Chicano\">Chicano<\/a> studies professor, regards Sailer&#8217;s statements on this subject as providing &#8220;a pretext and a negative justification for discriminating against US Latinos in the context of US history.&#8221; Acu\u00f1a claimed that listing Latinos as non-white gives Sailer and others &#8220;the opportunity to divide Latinos into races, thus weakening the group by setting up a scenario where lighter-skinned Mexicans are accepted as Latinos or Hispanics and darker-skinned Latinos are relegated to an underclass.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-37\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-37\">[37]<\/a><\/sup> Sailer considers <a href=\"\/info\/Hispanic\" title=\"Hispanic\">Hispanic<\/a> a non-racial characterization,<sup id=\"cite_ref-vdare.com_38-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-vdare.com-38\">[38]<\/a><\/sup> identifying <a href=\"\/info\/Non-Hispanic_Whites\" title=\"Non-Hispanic Whites\" class=\"mw-redirect\">non-Hispanic White<\/a> Americans as <a href=\"\/info\/Second-class_citizen\" title=\"Second-class citizen\">second-class citizens<\/a> because of <a href=\"\/info\/Affirmative_action\" title=\"Affirmative action\">affirmative action<\/a>, which he claims has caused and will cause more and more &#8220;anti-white <a href=\"\/info\/Pogroms\" title=\"Pogroms\" class=\"mw-redirect\">pogroms<\/a>&#8220;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-vdare.com_38-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-vdare.com-38\">[38]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"\/info\/United_States_presidential_election,_2004\" title=\"United States presidential election, 2004\">United States presidential election, 2004<\/a>, Sailer estimated that based on the intelligence tests from military records of candidates <a href=\"\/info\/George_W._Bush\" title=\"George W. Bush\">George W. Bush<\/a> and <a href=\"\/info\/John_Kerry\" title=\"John Kerry\">John Kerry<\/a>, Bush probably had a higher <a href=\"\/info\/Intelligence_Quotient\" title=\"Intelligence Quotient\" class=\"mw-redirect\">IQ<\/a> by about 4 IQ points.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nyt_17-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-nyt-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-39\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-39\">[39]<\/a><\/sup> In a report on the findings for <i><a href=\"\/info\/The_New_York_Times\" title=\"The New York Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/i>, journalist <a href=\"\/info\/John_Tierney_(journalist)\" title=\"John Tierney (journalist)\">John Tierney<\/a> called Sailer &#8220;a veteran student of presidential IQ&#8217;s&#8221;, and cited the judgement of Professor <a href=\"\/info\/Linda_Gottfredson\" title=\"Linda Gottfredson\">Linda Gottfredson<\/a>, an IQ expert at the <a href=\"\/info\/University_of_Delaware\" title=\"University of Delaware\">University of Delaware<\/a>, that Sailer&#8217;s study was a &#8220;creditable analysis&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nyt_17-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-nyt-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> Although citing Bush as having a higher IQ, Sailer has condemned Bush as &#8220;irresponsible&#8221; and &#8220;uninterested in proficiency and honesty&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nightmare_40-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-nightmare-40\">[40]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sailer summed up his view on <a href=\"\/info\/Nature_and_nurture\" title=\"Nature and nurture\" class=\"mw-redirect\">nature and nurture<\/a> in October 2012 as:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\">\n<p>If you analyze a host of real world outcomes using adoption studies, fraternal v. identical twin studies, twins-raised-apart studies, the history of early childhood intervention research, naturally-occurring experiments, differences between societies, changes over history, and so forth, you tend to come up with nature and nurture as being about equally important: maybe fifty-fifty. The glass is roughly half-full and half-empty.<sup id=\"cite_ref-epigenetics_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-epigenetics-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sailer&#8217;s article on <a href=\"\/info\/Hurricane_Katrina\" title=\"Hurricane Katrina\">Hurricane Katrina<\/a> was followed by accusations of racism from left-wing organizations <a href=\"\/info\/Media_Matters_for_America\" title=\"Media Matters for America\">Media Matters for America<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/info\/Southern_Poverty_Law_Center\" title=\"Southern Poverty Law Center\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-41\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-41\">[41]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-42\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-42\">[42]<\/a><\/sup> In reference to the <a href=\"\/info\/New_Orleans\" title=\"New Orleans\">New Orleans<\/a> slogan &#8220;let the good times roll&#8221;, Sailer commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\">\n<p>What you won\u2019t hear, except from me, is that &#8220;Let the good times roll&#8221; is an especially risky message for African-Americans. The plain fact is that they tend to possess poorer native judgment than members of better-educated groups.
