{"id":106769,"date":"2016-09-15T07:11:21","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T15:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=106769"},"modified":"2016-09-15T07:11:21","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T15:11:21","slug":"first-hasidic-woman-elected-as-brooklyn-civil-court-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=106769","title":{"rendered":"First Hasidic Woman Elected As Brooklyn Civil Court Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/2016\/09\/14\/rachel-freier-hasidic-judge\/\">NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)<\/a> \u2014 A mother of six has become the first Hasidic woman to become a civil court judge in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>CBS2\u2019s Magdalena Doris reports Rachel Freier broke barriers after grabbing nearly 41 percent of votes in the 5th District election, beating two other competitors in the Borough Park election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst Hasidic woman to win public office and to sit on the Civil Court Bench,\u201d Freier said.<\/p>\n<p>Freier has a long resume: she\u2019s a lawyer, a volunteer, a mom, a grandmother and an EMT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have a misconception that women in our community are operated and they don\u2019t have the ability to be successful and that\u2019s really wrong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>With a cellphone around her neck at all times, she\u2019s still on call for Ezras Nashim, the EMT company she helped found two years ago, specifically for Hasidic women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not here to compete with anyone else. We\u2019re not here to say something should be changed. We\u2019re women helping women and that\u2019s how it happened,\u201d Freier said.<\/p>\n<p>Freier also volunteers for a program for at risk youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s 24 hours in a day, so we can cram in a lot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Freier said she gets an average of five hours of sleep a night and credits her religion for carrying her through, breaking to pray three times a day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) \u2014 A mother of six has become the first Hasidic woman to become a civil court judge in Brooklyn.
