What’s a PUA? A pick-up artist.<\/p>\n
The Bible of pick-up artists is a book by Neil Strauss — "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists<\/a>."<\/p>\n It shows you how to seduce chicks quickly and cheaply.<\/p>\n A player seduces you and then leaves you, my friend says. A PUA seduces you and then keeps you around as a friend so he can have regular sex with you and other chicks he hooks.<\/p>\n I’m fascinated by "The Game" and the fast seduction community. I’ve never mastered the techniques because I fear they are deceitful (or quickly lead to deceit).<\/p>\n I IM with my new friend.<\/p>\n Woman: AWESOME! I call and ask my new friend: "When did you get involved in the pick-up movement?"<\/p>\n Friend: "It was an accident. When someone misrepresents themselves to you… I’m kinda stupid. I guess I’m gullible. I got pulled in to a lifestyle that doesn’t fit me. Eww."<\/p>\n Luke: "So when did you get picked up by a pick-up artist?"<\/p>\n Friend: "You are so bad. I can’t believe I’m telling a writer this. You’re going to write all this stuff up. I know you are."<\/p>\n Luke: "How did he present himself?"<\/p>\n Friend: "He was intensely pursuing me. Initially I wasn’t attracted to him. He’s my opposite. He’s a person who grows on you. You find him attractive because his personality is attractive. He does cute things. Once he started texting and pursuing more and more, I started really liking the person because he was so sweet and he was saying awesome things and making me feel really good."<\/p>\n "He said he wasn’t a pick-up artist. That he used to be. He’s more looking for a serious relationship. He’s not running around like a hoodlum."<\/p>\n Luke: "Did he present himself as wanting a serious relationship?"<\/p>\n Friend: "Now that I think about it, I don’t know. It seemed like it with the things he was doing, texting and calling numerous times a day. I’m thinking, ‘Wow, this person really likes me.’ I’m thinking he wouldn’t do this unless he was interested in pursuing something.<\/p>\n "Normally a guy who just sees you as a friend or as a one-night stand isn’t going to put in as much effort as this person did. It was a game. It was a way of seeing if he could. And once he could, that was it."<\/p>\n "Sometimes the PUA makes the girl think, ‘We’re just friends.’ Also, they make the girl think, ‘You’re the only one’ but they’re still friends… I don’t know. It’s so freakin’ weird.<\/p>\n "They don’t say that they date other people."<\/p>\n "Now I wonder if I am of any value to this person because he hardly spends any time with me."<\/p>\n "After I moved here, he wasn’t texting and calling as much. He always had an excuse… Maybe it was mission accomplished? Wow, that sucks! Yet his personality is so sweet that you can’t hate him."<\/p>\n "I guess in the PUA community a girl is not loyal if you’re friends with another guy. In the community, if you become friends with another guy’s girl, you’re dishonest. You’re not a loyal friend. It’s all about the control. He doesn’t really like me. He wants to control me."<\/p>\n Luke: "This PUA wants you to be monogamous with him but he’s not monogamous to you."<\/p>\n Woman: "Yeah."<\/p>\n "I’m not really good at keeping things to myself."<\/p>\n "You ask good questions."<\/p>\n "I just want girls to be aware… There are nice girls out there who are being taken advantage of. It’s not fair. I’m a nice girl. I don’t deserve to be sucked into this lifestyle."<\/p>\n "I have millionaires and billionaires and doctors and lawyers trying to pick me up… I don’t even care. I don’t even give them the time of day. Why should I give a PUA?<\/p>\n "These guys aren’t looking for love. They’re looking for as many vaginas as they can. It makes me queasy just thinking about it."<\/p>\n Luke: "If you had known he was primarily interested in sex and that he planned to continue to screw other women, would you have slept with him?"<\/p>\n Friend: "Absolutely not."<\/p>\n "Every girl wants to be in a relationship."<\/p>\n Freelance writer Chelsea G. Summers<\/a> responds to my inquiry: "Luke: To be honest, although I love Neil Strauss’s writing (especially The Dirt and Jenna’s bio), I’ve not read The Game. From what little I know of it, however, I’m not enthused. I think anyone who relies on making people feel badly about themselves in order to take advantage of their vulnerability can’t really respect himself in the morning.
