Steve Sailer writes<\/a>: It would be interesting to do a big statistical study of the background of rock stars. I suspect they tend to come from fairly high achieving if sometimes self-destructive backgrounds.<\/p>\n

The most memorable background for a rock star is perhaps Clash frontman Joe Strummer\u2019s, who pretended to be working class by never brushing his teeth. But Strummer\u2019s dad\u2019s cover story was he was a British diplomat, but was actually MI6 \u2014 he was the code keeper at the British embassy who translated incoming and outgoing messages for the James Bonds. Joe\u2019s dad was good friends with Soviet spy Kim Philby.<\/p>\n

Joe was head boy or whatever it\u2019s called at his boarding school in England<\/p>\n

The more I learn about Joe, the less I think about Joe\u2019s ostensible leftism and the more the name \u201cRudyard Kipling\u201d comes to mind. Joe\u2019s dad was born in Lucknow, India, where Kipling\u2019s protagonist Kim went to boarding school.<\/p>\n

Joe\u2019s last released song during his lifetime was \u201cMinstrel Boy,\u201d which plays over the credits in Sir Ridley Scott\u2019s Somali war movie \u201cBlack Hawk Down.\u201d \u201cMinstrel Boy\u201d is what Sean Connery sings on the rope bridge at the end of John Huston\u2019s adaptation of Kipling\u2019s \u201cThe Man Who Would Be King.\u201d<\/p>\n
