They understood that people have selfish desires. That&#8217;s why they didn&#8217;t trust power. Liberals trust power because they trust people more than conservatives. Conservatives don&#8217;t believe people are basically good, liberals do.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why this is not a democracy. It&#8217;s a republic. Only one branch of government (legislature) and only one half of that branch was decided by public vote.<\/p>\n<p>The founders did not even trust the people. &quot;Power to the people&quot; is a leftist belief based on the belief that people are basically good and so you give them as much power as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The general American belief has been that non-governmental bodies &#8212; generally religion &#8212; stop us from our worst behavior.
