{"id":102129,"date":"2016-07-24T10:05:47","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T18:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=102129"},"modified":"2016-07-24T10:05:47","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T18:05:47","slug":"better-know-an-rnc-white-supremacist-richard-spencer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lukeford.net\/blog\/?p=102129","title":{"rendered":"Better Know an RNC White Supremacist: Richard Spencer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_slatest\/2016\/07\/20\/richard_spencer_at_the_rnc.html\">Michelle Goldberg writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>CLEVELAND\u2014On Tuesday afternoon, the 38-year-old white nationalist Richard Spencer stood in Cleveland\u2019s Public Square with a hand-lettered sign saying, \u201cWanna Talk to a \u2018Racist\u2019?\u201d He wanted to demystify white separatism. \u201cBecause the society we live in, if you espouse our views you\u2019re usually shouted down, so I think a lot of people want to remain anonymous,\u201d he told me. \u201cI\u2019m one of the few people who will be open about stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spencer, who divides his time between Virginia and Montana, is the president of the National Policy Institute, which bills itself as \u201can independent organization dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States, and around the world.\u201d The founder of the website AlternativeRight.com, he\u2019s an important figure in the so-called alt-right movement. As he told one of his incredulous interlocutors in the Public Square, he believes that race \u201cis the foundation of culture, society, politics, and identity.\u201d He dreams of a white ethno-state, which will allow white people \u201cto unlock our potential. And that is the exploration of the universe. That is the unlocking of our Faustian will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spencer is excited by the way Trump is transforming the GOP into a party that\u2019s explicitly about white identity politics. \u201cTrump seems to be emotionally connected to us,\u201d he told me. \u201cNot really intellectually connected to us, but emotionally connected to millions of white people who think like I do. He\u2019s brought this existential quality to politics. He\u2019s asked questions of, Are we a nation? If we\u2019re a nation, we have borders. Conservatives are usually wimps who want to talk about \u2018laws\u2019 and \u2018the Constitution\u2019 and blah blah blah.
