Due to the obsessive grip that antisemitism exerts on weak and immature minds, most of the lies that exist in the Alt-Right seem to focus on matters relating to the Jews.
This is pretty odd, especially if you consider the fact that nothing reinforces disappearing Jewish identity better than the kind of ineffectual antisemitism that the present-day Alt-Right specialises in.
In a previous article, I pointed out how limited Jewish control of the Russian Revolution, the Soviet Union, and thus the Holodomor really was. In a supplementary article I then drew attention to the awkward fact—at least for the Alt-Right—that prominent Jews in the Communist Party actually opposed staging the Revolution, regarding it as too violent and risky. It was essentially the headstrong and impetuous “goy brigade” who were all for storming the Winter Palace and putting their fellow goys in the Tsarist regime to the sword.
In this article I want to look at another popular Alt-Right “meme” that is completely fake, namely the quite common idea that WWII was started by the Jews, and that Hitler was therefore just “defending” himself against aggression, and that any Jewish deaths that resulted can be laid at their own feet.
A Jewish friend says:
I realize that Liddell Is trying to make a specific point: to refute the headline in the English paper from 1933 showing Jewish response to German anti semitic policies…. It is impossible for anyone to opine on Jewish German relations under the Nazis without understanding the makeup of pre world war I Europe, how that changed as a result of the Communist revolution in the Soviet Union, the short lived Marxist regime in Hungary, and the breakup of the Austria-Hungarian empire. You really can’t understand it without knowing the history of the various Polish paritions and the various battles between Catholics and Protestants. How can one talk about Jews declaring war on Nazi Germany, without understanding the Jewish role in exploiting post WWI German weakness and obligations to make reparations payments to the Allies which was at least partly responsible for the hyperinflation in interwar Germany? How can one speak of Jews declaring war on Nazi Germany without understanding how currency manipulation was utilized to impoverish the German worker, often times at the expense of Jewish financial speculators? What does it mean that Hitler very rarely singled Jews out, but instead usually referred to Judeo Bolshevism as the enemy of Germany? What does it mean that Germany gave support to the Jewish community Palestine in order to encourage emigration from Germany? What does it mean that many of the nations of central and eastern Europe had huge populations of ethnic Germans who were discriminated against and whom any German leader, not just Hitler was under pressure to protect.
As I never cease telling persons, as Norman Finkelstein wrote, it was better to be a Jew in pre WWII Nazi Germany than it was to be a black in the American South. When the Germans and Soviets together dismembered Poland when they invaded in 1939, many Jews in Poland welcomed the Germans because they had fond memories of German governance before WWI when much of Poland was East Prussia and much of the rest of Poland after Tannenburg (or Masurian Lakes) was German occupied? They did not suspect at least at first that these new Germans were virulent anti semites. What of the sympathy that at least some Soviet Jews had for communism? What does it matter that the Polish government before it was attacked was both authoritarian and mildly anti semitic?
These are complex issues and I haven’t scratched the surface.
In fact Jews were the main (and unsuccessful) opponents of the America First movement. Jews made up the backbone of the American Communist Party which caused a tremendous convulsion after the Ribbentrop Molotov Pact. If anything this is the model for George Orwell’s 1984 where one day after having always been at war with Oceania that became an ally and they were and always had been at war with Eastasia. Communists hated Nazis with a passion until the pact and that position was enforced until June 22, 1941 (Barbarossa)
Jews were constantly trying to get the U.S. to ally with England and to intervene in WWII before the attack at Pearl Harbor
I don’t doubt that some Jews did their best to harm Nazi Germany, even declaring war on them, and those actions may have had no or small effect, but nevertheless they were attacks on the Nazis.

I watch everything else, start to finish. I work a solitary desk job & I’ll listen to the long streams while I work. Luke is an excellent host. He’s always in control of the guests & injects a good amount of humor & controversy to keep things interesting.

Alex McNabb, a white supremacist podcaster who works as an emergency medical technician in southern Virginia, is under investigation by the state’s Department of Health, a spokesperson for the department confirmed to HuffPost.
McNabb, 35, is a frequent co-host of “The Daily Shoah,” a popular neo-Nazi podcast. On the show he regularly tells stories about being an EMT, often referring to patients by racist slurs and comparing black patients to animals.
An anonymous complaint was made on Nov. 26 against McNabb, who works as an EMT in Patrick County, according to Marian Hunter, public relations coordinator for the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services. Because it’s an “open and active investigation,” Hunter did not describe the nature of the complaint.
His continued employment as an EMT, however, raises ethical and legal questions about whether an avowed racist and white nationalist can objectively make life-and-death decisions for patients of color, Jewish patients and other minorities, experts say.
“Anyone who is espousing this type of vitriolic racism on a regular basis — it casts serious doubts on their ability to provide emergency medical treatment for someone who does not fit their criteria for an ethnostate,” Keegan Hankes, senior researcher at the Southern Poverty Law Center, told HuffPost.
McNabb has not been charged with a crime and will not be suspended from his job during the state’s investigation, which could last up to 60 days.
McNabb didn’t respond to a HuffPost request Friday for comment about the investigation.
In a recurring segment on “The Daily Shoah,” McNabb assumes a persona he calls Dr. Narcan. In these segments, he tells his co-hosts stories about being an EMT. He regularly refers to black patients as “dindus,” a deeply racist slur common among the alt-right.
During a Nov. 8, 2016, episode, McNabb compared black patients to animals. “The heat brings out the wild in the dindu,” he said, adding that, “as winter approaches, the animals go into hibernation and the ridiculousness of the [911] calls goes down.”
In an Oct. 4, 2016, episode, during a Dr. Narcan segment, McNabb referenced an apartment complex that houses people from “all over Africa and West Africa.” He said emergency workers called it “Ebola Alley.” He then called a black woman a “Dinduisha” and compared her to a shaved “Harambe,” referring to the famous gorilla.
“It’s hard to find a dindu vein anyway, because they’re black,” he said during the episode.
He then told another story of an “unruly young African-American male child running around” an emergency room.
“As it turned out, this young African-American male was there to get blood drawn, so guess who volunteered to take his blood?” he told his co-hosts, who laughed in response. “Dr. Narcan enjoyed great, immense satisfaction as he terrorized this youngster with a needle and stabbed him thusly in the arm with a large-gauge IV catheter.”
Vickie Gendraw, pediatric phlebotomy coordinator at Tufts Medical Center, told HuffPost she was “appalled” at McNabb’s story. Medical professionals, she said, should “never, ever” use large-gauge needles on a pediatric patient…
The website Angry White Men, which monitors white supremacist figures, first reported on McNabb’s position as an EMT earlier this year. McNabb — who, unlike many in the white nationalist community, does not use an alias — made posts on social media showing himself in an EMT uniform.
The whole point of TRS and the Daily Stormer is to create a toxic form of White identitarianism that will effectively ghettoize the Alt-Right, and get anyone associated with it fired, made unemployable, or worse. This is why these operations are run by people like (((Mike “Edge Cases” Enoch))) and (((Weev))).
But these operations also include a fair number of expendable “useful idiots” and shabbos goys. One of the most prominent, because of his weird image, is Alex McNabb a slapheaded middle-aged man with a rubbery face and disgusting ear gauges that are probably breeding grounds of virulent disease and super bugs. Amazingly he works in the medical sector as an emergency medical technician (EMT), which is basically a nurse in an ambulance.
But rather than being fired for hygiene reasons, as he obviously should be, it looks like he is about to be fired from his job because of his association with the retard-racist podcast The Daily Shoah.

How would the Egyptians feel that the Israelites are going to become a “great nation” within their midst, simply use their land for a pasture during a famine, and then return to their own land triumphant?

Is there any down side to a group developing a tricky and dishonest reputation? Will becoming known for dishonesty and running scams and manipulation serve a group well in the long run? How do you think the Egyptians felt when they realized they had been manipulated or are the goyim too stupid to ever catch on? Might there be a backlash for this trickery? How would Jews feel if an alien group came to live among them and use manipulation and deceit to get what they wanted to keep the majority off balance?
How should Egyptians feel about a new group entering their land who made their living as shepherds when apparently the shepherd is detestable to Egyptians and the sheep is worshiped as divine? How would Jews do in the beef industry in India where the cow is sacred?
Gen. 47: 5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. So how might Egyptians react to their Pharoah giving the best parts of their land to foreigners? Might there be a backlash? How would they feel about these foreigners getting to run the Pharoah’s livestock? How do they feel about a foreigner (Joseph) being second in power in the land next to the Pharoah? Might they resent this foreign power and intrusion?
Gen. 47: 20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them.
Might the Egyptians come to resent Joseph and his people for turning them into slaves?

* It is a very different experience for me reading Genesis as a Jew vs as a Christian. As a Christian, the people in Genesis were characters in the Bible, religious figures, proto-Christians. As a Jew, these people feel like family, they feel like people I know, they’re the ancestors of my nation, which is an extended family. As a WASP, these characters did not feel close to me. They seemed primitive.
* The Jewish Bible doesn’t try to portray its Jewish heroes as one-dimensional and without flaws. Jews are named after the highly flawed Judah, son of Jacob, Joseph’s brother.
* Deciphering dreams seems to be a Jewish gift. Jews gave us psychology. Gypsies give us fortune telling. Gypsies are like low IQ Jews.
* Judah shows a ton of chutzpah speaking so directly to Joseph. You see classic Jewish verbal intensity. Judah says his father will die if Benjamin does not come home. “You’re killing me!” is a typical form of Jewish overstatement. “I’m dying here!”
* Jacob only loved the children of his wife Rachel. Genes matter. It is possible to love children not your own, just not as likely.
* Joseph sobbed to his brothers. Jews are more open with their emotions than WASPs.
* This clannish world is very different from the individualist WASP world, where WASPs don’t promise to kill their kids if XYZ does not happen. WASPs don’t tend to live through their children, unlike other groups.
* Pope John XXIII (baptized Joseph) greeted Jewish leaders in 1963: “I am your brother Joseph” and he proceeded to apologize for millenia of Christian anti-semitism.

On the one hand, this feels good for Jews, but it may signal a weakness and decline in Christianity.

* The brother sold Joseph for 20 pieces of silver, Joseph puts a silver goblet in the brothers’ possessions so he can blame them for stealing. Tricky legal reasoning! Not so much a WASP thing. Jews are known for trickery. Someone close to me bought a beautiful wool coat in the shuk in Jerusalem, but when the merchant wrapped it up, he substituted something far inferior. The outrage on our part was severe and clearly remembered almost 50 years later.
* This tricky reasoning shapes what we can discuss publicly. Steve Sailer wrote:

– Ethnocentric nostalgiaism: vividly seen in the current immigration debate, where Ellis Island-worship is substituted for facts and logic
– Be-Like-Meism: e.g., the common suggestion by Jewish pundits that all Mexican illegal immigrants have to do is act like the Jewish immigrants of 1906 and everything will turn out fine. Well, swell …
– Pseudo ethnic Humilityism: few Jews actually believe that Mexicans are just like Jews — they think Jews are much smarter — but they don’t want anybody else to notice that Jews are smarter so they advocate immigration policies that depend for their success upon Mexicans being just as smart as Jews. That this immigration policy is obviously bad for the country is less important than keeping up the charade that nobody mentions in the press that Jews are smarter than everybody else on average.
– Rube Goldbergism: overly complicated plans and analyses with too many moving parts to work reliably (e.g., the neocon plans for fixing the Middle East through invasion)
– Is-It-Good-for-the-Jewsism: I am a huge fan of enlightened self-interest, so I don’t object to this on principle
– Rube Goldbergian Is-It-Good-for-the-Jewsism: This could also be called He-Who-Says-A-Must-Say-B-C-D-E-Q-W-and-Zism. Jewish intellectuals have a tendency that on any topic related to Jews, they tend to think baroquely many steps down the line. Thus, the full panoply of the subjects that have been assumed to be bad-for-the-Jews and therefore ruled out of discussion in polite society is breathtakingly broad — for example, IQ has been driven out of the media in large part because it is feared that mentioning that Jews have higher average IQs would lead, many steps down the line, to pogroms.
– Missing-Piece-of-the-Puzzleism: One obvious problem with this tendency is that you can’t make a Rube Goldberg analysis work in the real world if you’ve banned the use of crucial moving parts, such as IQ
– Pay-No-Attention-to-that-Man-Behind-the-Curtainism: The biggest unmentionable, as the Mearsheimer-Walt brouhaha demonstrated once again, is also one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle for understanding how the modern world works: the influence of Jews.

It is anti-slavery when it comes to Jews being slaves, but it seems OK with the Egyptians selling themselves into slavery in a plan organized by Joseph.

According to Haamek Davar, the reason Joseph did not make them slaves was for the welfare of the state: He wanted them to remain self-supporting and not become wards of the government. So the Jewish commentaries seem to tell a different story than the text.

* First, when whites move into a black area, it is called gentrification and it is bad. Why is it bad? Well they say gentrification drives up home prices, which drives up rents and property taxes. That is true. But just a few days ago we were lectured that white flight drives down home prices which hurts blacks by around $48K in home value. So what do they want? Do they want higher home prices to help blacks, or lower home prices to help blacks?
Second, when blacks move into a white area, it is celebrated as diversity or desegregation. In most cases it results in lower property values and an increase in crime. But those side effects are considered a fair trade to achieve diversity. Any whites who object or complain are denounced and told, “this is who we are and if you don’t like it, you can leave.” So many whites end up leaving and are denounced even more for white flight.
Gentrification is just diversifying non-white homogeneous areas, while desegregation is about diversifying White homogeneous areas.
* It’s just a fact blacks commit more crime. When Jews happen to be the local non-black residents they end up being the victims. But this is not acceptable. Jews are not Puerto Ricans, after all.
This naturally raises the question: How can Jews complain about Black-on-Jew crime without upsetting the Narrative that both groups are perpetual victims?
The answer (duh!), is that White people are to blame. Whites victimize Blacks with gentrification. This causes Blacks to be unintentionally anti-semitic because they confuse Jews with the real White oppressors. Makes perfect sense.
* It’s similar to the recent coverage of the black serial killer who murdered 60 or more black women. Whites were to blame because they don’t police black neighborhoods.
* Growing up in NYC as a non-white, notion that Jews are honorary people of color seems ridiculous to me.
All the Jews I know are more pale-skinned than the average white, wealthier than the average white, more bookish than the average white and eat blander food than the average white.
In other words Jews are the whitest of all the white people we know!
* On the Eastern side of the Atlantic, Jews have largely lost their protected status as honorary non-whites. This has meant that the European left has been free to follow its Marxist and anti-white ideology to its logical conclusion.
1. Steve has often made the point that if “White Privilege” is real, then “Jewish Privilege” logically must be an order of magnitude greater. Well in Europe, the left largely agrees. Accusations of Anti-Semitism are now largely confined to opportunistic attacks on the Alt-Right etc. and ring increasingly hollow. European leftists now regard Jews as a peculiarly rich and well-connected (and consequently nasty) sub-set of whites. When he was running for Mayor of London, the far-left Labour Party politician Ken Livingston told a Muslim Asian audience that he couldn’t get Jews to vote for him because they simply have too much money – he may have had a point there with 70% of Jews now voting for the Tories in 2017.
2. Moreover, the Israel dynamic amplifies this effect. European leftists enjoyed fifty years of endorphin rushes from anti-white fetishising after World War II and consequently became addicted to them. As long as there were African colonies, Rhodesian white minority rule and South African Apartheid to keep delivering the narcotic hit of regular bouts of 2 minutes’ hate, leftists were content. That suddenly ended with Nelson Mandela’s election as President of South Africa and, unlike in America, there were no Rodney King/Abner Louima/Amadou Diallo moments to which to transition the rage so (I think, with some degree of reluctance) Israel-Palestine became the new Bad Whites v. Good Coloureds conflict and today’s European leftists now wear Arafat scarves even when they are at events which have nothing to do with the Levant. The only thing that is stopping Israelis from becoming the 21st century equivalent of the Afrikaners is some residual holocaust guilt amongst the left’s older (and whiter) cohorts.
3. Europe’s Jewish population is less than 1.3 million (if you include Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) and less than 1.1 million (if you don’t) compared to 5.7 million in the United States so the Jewish share of the population is dramatically smaller than in the US. Meanwhile, European Jews tend to be more heavily Sephardic and Yekke and are consequently much more politically conservative than (largely Eastern European-descended) American Jews. This means that while the 20th century left in the United States was enormously Jewish relative to the overall population, the European left wasn’t. This, in turn, meant that left wing Labour Zionism largely operated on a poseur level in Europe and was quickly abandoned when it fell out of fashion.
4. The ethnic group that occupies the equivalent position to blacks in Europe is Muslims – principally Pakistantis, Bangladeshis, Muslim Indians, Anglerians, Tunisians and Moroccans together with increasing numbers of Nigerians and Somalis (of whom the less said the better). There are crucial differences between Muslims and American blacks that make them far less malleable when it comes to the “Jews aren’t really white” trope, namely:
(a) While jazz, blues, rap, hip hop, R & B and reggae have allowed Anglo-American blacks to heavily influence western popular culture, Islam is simply too retrograde to influence high culture and too bumpkiny to influence popular culture – it’s always struck me that the fundamental reason why black culture has been so influential in entertainment and the arts is because it introduced sexual looseness to starchy white culture whereas Islam (as Steve correctly points out) is a “jealousy belt” culture which hews in the opposite direction. One corollary of this is that Muslims are more scornful (and resentful) of western culture than blacks and have not been acculturated into its norms to the same degree so their sub-culture is more Asperger-ish when it comes on picking up respectable norms.
(b) Muslims have their own culture in way that Anglo-American blacks (whose whole culture is effectively an offshoot of 18th and 19th century Anglo culture) fundamentally don’t. Blacks need to generate fantasies like “Wakanda” to do what Muslims can simply do by opening history books and reading about the Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Mughals, the Ottomans and the Moors. Muslims can thus operate within self-contained social orders (albeit poorly) while black Anglos can’t – because they evolved as a sub-culture not a self-contained one. Black resentment of whites is entirely jealousy-based – they are humiliated by their dysfunctionality and act up as a consequence. By contrast, Muslim resentment of Europeans and North Americans combines jealousy (in relation to superior western science, technology and finance) with contempt (for single mothers, gays, trannies etc.). While grassroots blacks are anti-Semitic, their elites seem to be sufficiently insecure that they feel obliged (in an American context) to feign the Philo-Semitism of their white leftist allies. Muslim elites, by contrast, have a plan – to wit, their intellectual godfather Sayed Qutb believed that Islam had fallen behind the West technologically and that the West had allowed itself to be dragged back into barbarism culturally, leaving political Islam with the unique role of combing the best of technology and culture – whereas blacks don’t.
(c) Muslims have their own non-English language media markets broadcasting and publishing news and entertainment in Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun, Kari, Hindi, Bengali, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, Farsi, Arabic, Turkish etc. This creates another cultural variable – a set of cultural transmitters that are outside of the influence of the English-speaking culture that virtually monopolises black Anglo attention. So, for example, when the British Labour politician Lord Ahmed (a Kashmiri) was jailed for dangerous driving in his Jaguar X-Type that caused the death of a fellow motorist, he dutifully apologised to the family of his victim in Court and issued the usual press statements (in English) expressing remorse but then gave an interview on an Urdu language radio station saying that the reason he had received a custodial sentence was (you could have guessed it) a Jewish conspiracy. The effect of English language dominance on the state of high culture is, of course, a long-running iSteve theme.
5. Notwithstanding all the differences between Islamic and black culture, I strongly suspect that black obedience to rule against Jew-bashing will only last as long as:
(a) a white majority does; and
(b) a large and coherent Jewish minority does – and in this regard, Audacious Epigone seems to believe that out-marriage and low levels of reproduction amongst American Jews is progressively diluting them.
* Blacks’ IQ is too low to appreciate the tortured subtleties of the academic theory that Jews in America are oppressed non-whites. Good for blacks.
A minor government official from China who visited the US around the time of Charlottesville observed to me that blacks who are undergoing trials and tribulations in life should take their problems to the Jews for redress and not waste time with the Anglo-Saxons and smashing up their statues of Anglo-Saxon Confederate generals, since it was such an obvious truism to him that the Jews are in control of the US and not any other group. He said this in reference to the toppling of Robert E. Lee monuments by blacks which offended his sensibilities—it was too close to the Maoist lawlessness he experienced firsthand as a young man and also because Robert E. Lee’s is homonymous with the Chinese surname Li and therefore enjoys popularity in China.
* If the Jews would only get into the real estate business, they could slow down Whitey’s gentrification agenda against everybody. But, I suppose, that’s one of those fields of endeavor they’ve been prevented from entering forcing them to rely upon usury. Sad.
* I always found the case of Len Elmore interesting. Elmore went to UMd-CP, played in the NBA and graduated from Harvard Law School.
He married a Jewish woman and has had two kids bar-mitzvahed.
He tried (and failed) at being an NBA agent, mostly because … as he noted, the players didn’t trust him, as a black guy, to be as good as negotiator as a white (Jewish, duh) agent. I do agree with the Forward and the several commenters who noted that unless someone is wearing Hasidic clothing or a yarmulke, most folks would fail to notice the difference between white and Jews.
Other cultural markers of this existed in places like the show “The Wire”, with the Jewish Lawyer (Maury Levy) ably representing the various ‘innocent’ drug sellers in court…while being paid in cash.
* It sounds like living in majority white nations is good for the Jews as it offers the secular ones herd immunity.
Apart from all that unpleasantness in mid-20th Germany, it seems like a bad idea to work towards making whites a minorities in their countries.

It was in the Shleikes Jewish food restaurant in Bnei Brak that I got the definitive proof of how gossip has conquered the ultra-Orthodox public. I had arrived for a joint interview with journalist Itzik Ohana, whose specialty is coverage of get-togethers between secular celebs and rabbis, along with Haredi political analyst Yisrael Cohen, who admits that he’s turned to yellow journalism in recent years. By chance, the new publisher of the Haredi website Behadrei Haredim, Miki Barzel, came in. Cohen, who has a healthy sense of humor, asked Ohana to take his picture with Barzel and post it on Twitter, with a caption wondering whether he was defecting to Behadrei Haredim. The photo quickly spread from the tweet to a galaxy of WhatsApp groups.
It then turned out that others had also clandestinely photographed the chance meeting two weeks ago. A hullabaloo ensued. Within minutes, Cohen’s phone began to vibrate with messages from a bevy of ultra-Orthodox media-industry reporters who wanted to know whether he was actually leaving Kol Harama, the radio station he’s identified with. Cohen’s denial only heightened the suspicions.
In the meantime, a report about the fact that I had met with the two jokesters at Shleikes (which means “suspenders” in Yiddish) found its way into the Haredi gossip columns, accompanied by a historic photo: Cohen, Ohana and me seated with a plate of gefilte fish garnished with carrot, on the table between us. Even before the gefilte fish had been digested, we all gained everlasting fame. A week later, photographer Tomer Appelbaum, who took the picture of the duo, was the subject of an item on the Haredi news site actualic.co.il.
After years in which the Haredi press was generally quite limited, both in terms of content and dissemination, the advent of the internet stood that world on its head. Five years ago, the first official gossip column, Leibele, was inaugurated on Behadrei Haredim. It’s since been joined by Bekleine, on the Actualic site, Tzitzit on the Kikar Hashabbat news site and also by Pashkevil, a website geared to the Haredi advertising industry. A dedicated gossip site called Pichifkes initially took off but shut down a year ago. And there are also ultra-Orthodox groups on WhatsApp and Twitter, which are abuzz with gossip and often beat the conventional columns to the punch.

The Alt-Right will continue to be the subject of books and articles for the foreseeable future. As the most effective recent manifestation of white nationalism in the United States, it warrants serious and sober analysis. It may, however, be time to start discussing the Alt-Right in the past tense. To be clear, the extreme right continues to exist, and racist and anti-Semitic violence remains a horrific threat. I fear we will see more violence from people radicalized in the near future. Nevertheless, the Alt-Right movement (to the degree it ever was a movement) is no longer gaining ground. At this point, it is worth assessing where the Alt-Right fits in the history of the openly racist right, and how it differed from its ideological predecessors.
As the Alt-Right was growing, people in the movement often discussed what they derisively called “White Nationalism 1.0.” The term refers to those white nationalist groups and individuals that were active in the late 20th century and the first years of the 21st century.
The Alt-Right used that term mockingly because those groups were ineffective to the point of hurting their own cause. They had a deserved reputation for violence and had little to offer well-adjusted white Americans. Those groups were known for their constant infighting, and their leaders attempted to attract cult-like followings. In some cases, those white nationalists formed literal religious cults.
In its early days, when it was still almost entirely online, the Alt-Right mostly sought to create distance between itself and groups like the American Nazi Party and its successors—although there were differences of opinion on this subject within the Alt-Right. The Alt-Right briefly succeeded in creating a brand that appealed to some people not on the margins of society. By the end of 2016, however, the more radical elements of the Alt-Right seemed to have gained the upper hand, and it became less conspicuously different from earlier white nationalist movements.
When I first examined the Alt-Right, I viewed it as a new phenomenon, one representing a break from its extreme right ancestors despite promoting a similar ideology. In hindsight, the distinctiveness of the Alt-Right becomes less obvious. Most commentators note that the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which turned deadly, was the moment the Alt-Right became viewed as just another Ku Klux Klan or National Alliance.
In this regard, the Alt-Right has followed a similar trajectory as its antecedents. For the extreme right, a reputation for violence is usually self-defeating. After the Oklahoma City bombing, the militia movement stopped making gains. When members of racist groups engaged in violence in the 1980s and 1990s, their organizations were sued to the point of oblivion. Lawsuits, even when unsuccessful, are one of the more effective tactics against the extreme right, as they sap the resources of groups already operating on shoestring budgets. The Alt-Right has discovered this over the last year.
But even in its salad days, when the Alt-Right was mostly a trollish Internet subculture, it was already mimicking many of its predecessors’ methods, perhaps inadvertently.
