Filtering Torah Through Our Own Beliefs

Steven writes Seforim: "The second essay in Marc Shapiro’s new book is even more… mind-blowing. He shows how the Rambam systematically excluded from the Mishneh Torah almost all of the Talmudic halachot that were derived from premises which the Rambam regarded as superstitious, and therefore erroneous. Shapiro demonstrates at length how the Rambam filtered the Torah through his own understanding and actually negated portions of the tradition that he regarded as unsound. Now maybe you have to be the Rambam to undertake that task for klal yisrael. But arguably everyone does something similar in his own engagement with halachah."
