I used to assume that if you made a friend, you made him for life. It doesn’t always work that way. I have some friends from childhood but many intense friendships burned out. The most stable friendship is one where you’ve turned an enemy into a friend. Then you both have a big stake in maintaining good relations, to show how magnamious and big-hearted you are, and frankly it’s just a wonderful feeling to turn an enemy into a friend. It’s the best alchemy.
